Empathy is not what you offer when someone tells you how they feel — it is what you catch when they are trying not to show it. The pause before someone agrees. The energy that drops when a decision is announced. Most professionals hear words. The ones with real presence hear what the words are protecting. Niceness responds to what people show you. Empathy picks up what they leave unsaid. Tonight, we work on the second one.
