Action Alert – Call your Senators regarding Meat Processing BY AUGUST 6!

Dear friend,

Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund just learned that the Senate Agriculture Committee is scheduled to “mark up” the farm bill on Thursday, August 6, 2026, which may include recommendations to the full Senate. There are two meat processing bills that would make an enormous difference to regenerative livestock ranchers and farmers.

Ask Your Senators to Support the LOCAL Foods Act (S. 1212)

The bipartisan Welch-Lee LOCAL Foods Act would clarify and expand the personal-use exemption for on-farm slaughter to include joint and community ownership of livestock, making it easier for families and communities to purchase meat directly from local farmers.

Ask Your Senators to Support the PRIME Act (S. 2409)

The bipartisan King-Paul PRIME Act would allow the intrastate sale of meat processed at custom-exempt slaughter facilities, expanding processing options for livestock producers and increasing consumer access to locally raised meat.

WHY THESE BILLS BELONG IN THE FARM BILL

Together, the LOCAL Foods Act and PRIME Act will:

Expand access to local meat.
Increase local and regional processing opportunities.
Keep more food dollars in rural communities.
Build a stronger, more resilient food system.
Support independent farmers and ranchers.
Strengthen Conservation That Works for Farmers
The Farm Bill should also invest in conservation programs by:
Making programs more accessible for small and beginning farmers.
Supporting soil health, rotational grazing, water quality, and drought resilience.
Investing in practical, producer-led conservation practices that improve farm profitability and resilience.
