Sloan's Volunteer Spotlight - Ray Lum

Ray Lum is a very active volunteer for the Planetarium, Education & Outreach, Exhibits, and Special Events. As a retiree, he volunteers to both pass the time and help the community. Ray encourages other retirees to volunteer at a non-profit like Sloan and Longway because it’s a fun way to give back. He really appreciates that our “staff is super friendly and know who I am.”

There's a great saying that reflects Ray: If you need something done, ask a busy person. When he isn't volunteering for Sloan and Longway, Ray is the President of the Retired Men’s Fellowship Club, Treasurer of the Buick Salaried Retirement Club of Greater Flint, Treasurer of the Chinese Association of Greater Flint, and Assistant Treasurer of the Sierra Club: Nepessing Five Rivers Group. Ray also teaches mahjong at the senior center and photography classes at Mott Community College.

When Ray is not giving back to the community he’s traveling and staying active. He enjoys playing tennis and participating in the Crim Festival of Races.

Thank you to Ray, and to ALL of our volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering with either Sloan Museum of Discovery or Longway Planetarium, learn more at SloanLongway.org/Volunteer
Sloan Museum is Now a Museums for All Member

Sloan Museum of Discovery is now a "Museums for All" member! The Museums for All program helps reduce financial barriers of low income families that may prevent them from attending museums. For all Genesee County residents, general admission to Sloan Museum is free due to the Arts Education & Cultural Enrichment millage that was passed in 2018. Now, we also have something to help out-of-county patrons who receive food assistance from SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Progam). Through our participation as a Museums for All member, the general admission fee is just $3.00 for up to 4 individuals per SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, and a valid form of photo ID. It's that easy! To learn more about Museums for All, go to Museums4All.org
