New Genesee County History Podcast Delves Into Artifact Stories

If you like local and state history, you'll love our new podcast, Discover Uncover! Sloan Museum is the caretaker of nearly 50,000 curated artifacts and over 100,000 archives that highlight Flint and Genesee County's rich cultural, political, and industrial history. The Discover Uncover podcast was produced to bring our history-loving patrons on a learning journey that delves deep into the artifacts' back stories. The podcast is hosted by Jerome Threlkeld, Community Engagement Coordinator and lifelong resident of Flint, and Geoffrey Woodcox, Sloan's Curator of History Collections. The first episode, launched on November 30, 2023, features the devastation and reconstruction of the infamous Flint Beecher Tornado of 1953. The second episode features disparate housing policies set during the massive influx of southern workers during Flint's explosive population growth from 1910 to 1920. Episodes 3 and 4 will be ready to hear or watch in January. Watch Discover Uncover on YouTube, stream on SloanLongway.org/DiscoverUncover, or find it on your favorite podcast app. Please feel free to leave us a voicemail at (810) 237-3417, or email Podcast@SloanLongway.org with any comments, suggestion, or questions.

Sloan Museum of Discovery is now a "Museums for All" member! The Museums for All program helps reduce financial barriers of low income families that may prevent them from attending museums. For all Genesee County residents, general admission to Sloan Museum is free due to the Arts Education & Cultural Enrichment millage that was passed in 2018. Now, we also have something to help out-of-county patrons who receive food assistance from SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Progam). Through our participation as a Museums for All member, the general admission fee is just $3.00 for up to 4 individuals per SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, and a valid form of photo ID. It's that easy! To learn more about Museums for All, go to Museums4All.org
National Speaker and Author, Richard Harwood, featured Keynote Speaker at Inspirational Event in Flint on January 17

"Owning Our Truth, Embracing Our Change: HOPE Edition" will feature Richard C. Harwood of the Harwood Institute on Wed., Jan. 17, 10 a.m.-Noon at St. Michael's Conference Center in Flint. The event is free to the public.

The speech will be part of Harwood's nationwide campaign Enough, Time to Build. His keynote, "Unleashing The Potential For Building a More Hopeful Path Forward," will engage and inspire the community to step forward, turn outward and unleash potential. The event is supported by Community Foundation of Greater Flint in collaboration with Sloan Museum.

In addition to being the President and Founder of The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, Harwood is an innovator, author and speaker. For over three decades, he has devoted his career to revitalizing the nation's hardest-hit communities, transforming the world's largest organizations, and reconnecting institutions to society. He has been recruited to solve some of the most difficult problems of our time, including being called into Newton, CT after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He regularly appears in national media and has written six books, scores of articles and the groundbreaking "Civic Virus: Why Polarization is a Misdiagnosis" (which some of Genesee County residents participated in).

The keynote and other activities will take place Wed., Jan. 17, 2024, 10 a.m.-noon, St. Michael's Conference Center, 609 E. 5th Ave., Flint, MI.
