| | New Podcast Digs Into Genesee County's Historical Artifacts
Sloan Museum is the caretaker of nearly 50,000 curated artifacts and over 100,000 archives that highlight Flint and Genesee County's rich cultural, political, and industrial history. The new Discover Uncover podcast was produced to bring our history-loving patrons on a learning journey that delves deep into the artifacts' back stories. The podcast is hosted by Jerome Threlkeld, Community Engagement Coordinator and lifelong resident of Flint, and Geoffrey Woodcox, Sloan's Curator of History Collections. The newest episode features an interview with the Anishinabek artist, Adam Avery, and his Native American beadwork currently on display in the history gallery. Premiering on February 5 is an in-depth interview about the dramatic and significant history of the WWII Hellcat Tank Destroyer seen in the History Gallery. Watch Discover Uncover on YouTube, stream on SloanLongway.org/DiscoverUncover, or find it on your favorite podcast app. Please feel free to leave us a voicemail at (810) 237-3417, or email Podcast@SloanLongway.org with any comments, suggestion, or questions. We may use your voice or comment in upcoming episodes. (This is a new service at Sloan; if you are interested in being a valued and visible sponsor of Discover Uncover, please contact DCampbell@SloanLongway.org). |

| | Sloan's Volunteer Spotlight - Jeff Bennett
Jeff Bennett volunteers in the Sloan Museum Artifact Collections department researching the history of items that have been donated. He enjoys seeing the families and school groups visiting the museum because, “that makes everything worthwhile.” Jeff believes that everyone has something to contribute in telling Flint’s story, and he encourages anyone who has the spare time to do so.
Jeff’s long history with Flint began when he started attending the Flint Auto Auction many years ago. While writing textbooks for Northwood University, Sloan's staff had assisted Jeff in his research about General Motors' early days and longtime GM Executive Alfred P. Sloan. Jeff now volunteers on the Sloan Museum Auto Fair Committee, the United Way of Midland’s Allocation Panel, and with the Blessed Sacrament’s car show.
When he isn’t volunteering, Jeff works as a substitute teacher and enjoys going to the Flint Institute of Arts and Flint's Back to the Bricks events. As an amateur automotive historian, he enjoys all things automotive-related.
Thank you to Jeff, and to ALL of our volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering with either Sloan Museum of Discovery or Longway Planetarium, learn more at SloanLongway.org/Volunteer. |
| | Sloan Museum is Now a Museums for All Member
Sloan Museum of Discovery is now a "Museums for All" member! The Museums for All program helps reduce financial barriers of low income families that may prevent them from attending museums. For all Genesee County residents, general admission to Sloan Museum is free due to the Arts Education & Cultural Enrichment millage that was passed in 2018. Now, we also have something to help out-of-county patrons who receive food assistance from SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Progam). Through our participation as a Museums for All member, the general admission fee is just $3.00 for up to 4 individuals per SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, and a valid form of photo ID. It's that easy! To learn more about Museums for All, go to Museums4All.org. |
