Subject: When Your Dojo Walks The Talk...

Friend,

Be honest...

When you read the subject line to this email, you were probably thinking about fighting. :)

Well, certainly you should be teaching your students how to defend themselves, but when I say "walking the talk," in this context I'm speaking about practicing what you preach.

Martial arts instructors and school owners seem to always market their services by talking about things like:
  • Honor!
  • Integrity!
  • Courage!
  • Self-Control!
  • Humility! (or should it be, "humility.")
  • Respect!
  • Loyalty!
  • Honor! (I know, we said that already - but no one really ever knows what it is, so they tend to use it a lot since it's such a nebulous word*)
And the reason why is because parents what their kids to learn those things. But how many school owners and instructors actually walk the talk?

Obviously, I couldn't give you an accurate statistic, but anecdotally I would say, "Damned few."

So, what we're going to be discussing for the foreseeable future (the next week or two) is how to walk the talk, in a way that gives your students a deeper reason to keep coming back to classes...

...and in a way that gives them a deeper reason to refer their friends to your dojo.

So, stay tuned -- there's some good info coming your way soon.

Until next time,

P.S. - Walking the talk also makes your job a lot more rewarding. When you're making an impact, not just in your students' lives but in the community as well, you're going to be a lot more satisfied with your job than you would be by just teaching people how to fight and win trophies. Not like that stuff isn't fun, but the luster wears off after so many years, and the impact it leaves is short-lived. If you really want to make your mark, this is how you do it.

P.S.S. - *Read my book on character education lessons for kids and you'll know exactly what you're talking about and what to say when you do mat chats on these topics.
