Subject: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's Ugly Step-Cousin?

I want to apologize in advance to my German subscribers for showing this video. But you have to admit, watching two guys in lederhosen doing "jiu-jitsu" is pretty funny:


On a more serious note, I came across some awesome historical footage from the Gracie Academy in Brazil in the fifties. In it, you can see Carlos doing some freestyle, and Helio demonstrating a lot of judo-like self-defense.

Oh, and there's a cheesy Charles Atlas looking ad at the end. Take a look:


And finally, here's a very frank discussion on tradition versus blind obedience, the reasons for commercializing certain aspects of BJJ (adding belts for kids), and BJJ without sparring.

P.S. - I think that if they lose the lederhosen and increase the beer-drinking in class, that German Jiu-Jitsu thing might just catch on...
