Teaching and shooting in Cape May
Four days in Cape May, NJ, teaching and shooting is my idea of a great time. My workshop started with great weather and ended with not-so-great weather, but it didn’t stop us. Thursday night we shot an amazing sunset, Friday was a day for shooting horseshoe crabs as they came ashore to lay eggs and the birds flocking to binge on the eggs. We photographed the historic Victorian houses and even headed out in the rain Saturday evening to photograph a lighthouse during the “blue hour.” Read more on my blog and see a gallery of photos.

Price drop on July's Composition and Light workshop in Vermont
I know people are still suffering from the bad economy, so I dropped the price of July’s Composition and Light workshop in Vermont. The price is now $295.00 and you can save $45.00 if you register by June 15. Returning clients can register for $245.00 at any time. It will be a great weekend where we talk about seeing light, recognizing what makes good photographs and how important composition is to a photo. Sign up now.
Shooting the same event after 25 years
Monday I strolled down the street a few blocks to where the annual Somerville Memorial Day parade pauses at a monument to fallen soldiers. The parade is small but important. Somerville fills up on Memorial Day with bicycles as one of the biggest bike races takes over the streets. As I was shooting, I realized I shot my first Tour of Somerville 25 years and I’ve been the unofficial official photographer for most of them. I wrote in my blog about how I was looking for a different shot this year and they methods I used to get it.

Thinking about bridges
I want to give a quick shout out to the Monmouth Camera Club. I judged their monthly contest last week and was surprised to learn their theme for the month was bridges. I’ve spent lots of time the past few years photographing Vermont’s covered bridges and I’m in the process of getting everything together for a book.
Photo tip
Don't give up on the dark - During the Cape May workshop we were getting pretty tired at the end of the day. I had seen a row of tents on the beach and knew they would make a fun photo but the light was too harsh. So long after the sun had set I said I wanted to go shoot the tents and asked if anyone wanted to join me. I got some strange looks but everyone had enough energy left to join me. The street lights were yellow and cast a strange color on the sand and the tents. Tire tracks made interesting patterns in the beach and there was barely enough light in the sky to give it some blue. I shot this at f/5.6 for 30 seconds at ISO 800 and my lens was zoomed to 20mm. So when you think the day is over, there usually is more out there to shoot.
