Birds, beauty and the joy of slowing down

Photographing birds in Florida is not just about pointing a camera and clicking away. It is about watching, waiting, and finding beauty in small moments. I think of bird photography as a mix of patience and creativity. I am not just trying to document a bird. I am looking for light, gesture, and a sense of personality. Florida is perfect for that because the birds are used to people, so you can slow down and think about composition, background, and the story you want to tell.

On my recent workshop in Florida, we had amazing light, great weather, and plenty of birds willing to show off. From Roseate Spoonbills glowing pink in the sunrise to little Burrowing Owls peeking out of their nests, every day brought a new challenge and a new reward. It is what I love most about bird photography — that mix of art and nature, patience and timing, all coming together in a split second.

Colorful show at the gallery
My gallery in Woodstock, VT, is hosting a special show we are calling Color My World. The show features vibrant images from around the globe by myself and gallery co-owners Ron Lake and Bob Wagner. The photos capture the beauty and energy of places like Iceland, Spain, France, Italy, Cuba, Peru, and Namibia. It's a fun exhibit, stop if you are in the area or you can see the photos on the gallery website at  https://www.focusvermont.com/gallery/color-the-world/
Grab your camera, we're heading out after dark
I’m excited to offer another chance to explore Vermont’s night skies this summer. The July Night Skies and Light Painting workshop has one opening and I’ve added a second workshop in June. There is nothing quite like standing in a quiet Vermont field, watching stars fill the sky while the distant calls of owls and coyotes echo through the darkness.

During the workshop I’ll show you how to photograph the stars, especially the Milky Way, and how to use different flashlights to creatively light barns, covered bridges, fields and old buildings to add drama to night photos. It is a fun and creative few days. Click the following links to get details about the June and July workshops.
Let’s hit the road — Oregon workshop spot is open
A spot just opened up for my Oregon Coast and Waterfalls photography workshop coming up May 4-9. We’ll kick things off in Portland before heading out to the coast, exploring some of my favorite beaches and hidden spots along the way. I’ve done this trip several times and know some great places for photography.

We’ll wrap up the workshop along the Columbia River, where we’ll photograph incredible waterfalls and lush scenery. It’s a fun mix of coast, forest and rivers — and a great chance to create some stunning images. Covered bridges, dirt roads and peak color
Vermont is pretty special any time of year, but fall is when it really shows off. The colors are incredible, the back roads are quiet and there’s something about photographing a covered bridge surrounded by brilliant foliage that never gets old. My Vermont Fall Foliage Photography Workshop is October 3-6, based in Woodstock, right in the heart of some of the best scenery in the state. We’ll spend our days wandering back roads, finding hidden spots, and chasing great light.

This workshop is all about getting out in the field, having fun, and making some beautiful photos along the way. I’ll share some of my favorite locations and tips for capturing Vermont at its peak. If you love fall color and want to spend a few days with your camera in a stunning place, this is the workshop for you.
