The creativity of the Cuban people |
| | I just back from my workshop in Cuba. It had been five years since I was there and the country has disintegrated even more. Many more people were begging on the street, especially in the tourist areas. They were asking not only for money but for food. I even had a woman asking for shampoo and soap. I don't know if she was selling it and had a good spiel that worked but it showed how creative people there need to be to survive. Cuba is famous for keeping thousands of old American cars running, they are everywhere, although most have few original parts having been refit with engines from Russian cars or tractors. The first day there I saw this man selling his art while sitting on a curb in Havana. The work was decent but not great. He didn't beg but offered a free drawing knowing most people would give him something for it. He used an old pen that he obviously didn't buy and the dirt on his face and hands and around his finger nails told me he hadn't bathed recently. I asked his name and he told me Pablo- but not Picasso. He thought it was pretty funny and enjoyed saying it a couple of times. He has joy in his eyes even though life is pretty tough, at least by our standards. | | Photographing flowers workshop series I like looking at flower photos but they aren't my strong suit photographically. Several people have asked me about doing a flower photography workshop but I've been hesitant since I'm only OK at it. It hit me that I know someone who is great at photographing flowers, so Richard Kent of New Jersey is going to lead a four night series. Rick takes a different approach to his flower photos, he doesn't just find some pretty flowers and start snapping, he's very intentional in his approach and plans the shots before pointing the camera. Lighting is of utmost importance as are his skills at post processing. So he will have sessions on planning and setup, lighting and then post processing. The final session will be feedback from Rick and me on images you shoot during the workshop. It will be a great series and I look forward to learning from him. | | | More night photography fun in Vermont I've added another Vermont Night Skies and Light Painting workshop this summer. The July version is nearly full so we'll go explore the night in June. There is something special about being out in a Vermont field as the stars shine deep in the night sky and the distant sound of owls and coyotes break the silence. I like to use my various flashlights to light up foreground items like barns, covered bridges, fields and old buildings. It is a fun few days, you can get more info about the June workshop or the July workshop. |
| | 1 opening for Oregon workshopI just had a cancellation for my workshop in Oregon that is May 4-9. We're starting in Portland and then heading to the beach and driving down the coast to some special spots that I've been to several times. We end the workshop back up along the Columbia River where we'll photograph spectacular waterfalls. You can get more info about the workshop and register at https://www.lorenphotos.com/product/oregon-coast-and-waterfalls-workshop/ |
