2023 was, well, not the best year for me. I always try to look at the bright side of things and I'm happy to be healthy, if you don't count my ankle. I broke it back in June when I crashed my bicycle. Recovery has been slow due to me not taking care of it right away. I went to Iceland three days after getting my cast off and then the next month headed over to Namibia for an exciting workshop while wearing one of those big moon boots and climbing sand dunes. While the bones have healed nicely the muscles and tendons are still funky. Since I really didn't start physical therapy until Oct. I'm still gimping around. But it will get better.

There were a couple of other major events that really brought me down in 2023. My beloved brother-in-law Scott Milligan died in April. Then in September my brother Louis had a major stroke. He is still in a rehab center fighting to regain control of his left side. I'm thankful that his mind and speech are great and he has a wonderful attitude since it will be a long battle.

I've decided not to do any international workshops in 2024, I have to say I just wasn't feeling it. I'm planning several for 2025 including a return to Namibia, Iceland and Cuba. I am excited for several U.S. trips in 2024 including photographing Florida's spring in March, April's total solar eclipse in Dallas and going to Maine's Acadia National Park in June. Of course I'll have several workshops here in Vermont including winter in January, night skies in Aug. and fall foliage in Oct. I'm doing many more online and short workshops in 2024, see some of them below.

I'm looking forward to 2024 being a great year and I hope you and your family are healthy, peaceful and happy. Here's to 2024!
Getting the most from Lightroom
Lightroom is one of the best photo editing tools around. I love it for cataloging my images but the real power is in the ease of use and quality of editing. Over 90% of my photos are edited only in Lightroom and in this online workshop I'll show how to get the most out of the Develop module. This isn't a beginner workshop, you should have some familiarity because we're going to spend four hours digging into ways you can make your photos really pop. It is a lot of fun and you'll be amazed the difference a few adjustments can make. The workshop is Saturday, Feb. 10. Free Lightroom Lens Blur Seminar

In this free seminar I'll show you how to get the most out of a rather hidden Lightroom feature - lens blur. If you haven't worked with lens blur, it is a powerful tool that can help make your photo's main subject really stand out.

I'll show you how to use the tool, the basic slider is pretty simple but we'll go deeper and you'll see how to change what is in focus by visualizing the depth and how you can control that.

You'll even learn how to use Lightroom's masking capabilities to isolate parts of your photo and have them in focus while something next to it is out of focus. You can't do this photo in your camera.

The session will be recorded so if you can't make the live seminar you'll be able to watch it later.

Friday, Jan. 5
7:00 - 8:00 p.m. EDT

Winter Indoor Workshop Series
When the weather turns colder and the trees are bare it isn’t always as much fun to get out and shoot and many people lose their photo mojo over the winter. You can keep your skills sharp or learn new ones with a specially designed workshop series you can do in the comfort of your home. Plus you'll get feedback on your shots.

In this four session series, you’ll get assignments that keep you thinking about your camera settings, composition and photography in general while staying warm and safe indoors. Each session is via Zoom and will be recorded so you can watch later if you can’t make a live session.

During each session we’ll talk about fun things you can shoot in your house and techniques you can use to make unique photos. You’ll have two weeks to complete an assignment, really it’s just a topic and suggestion of things to photograph around your home. After you complete each assignment, you’ll upload one or two photos and get feedback during the next session. This isn’t a photo contest, getting feedback can be scary but it is a great way to expand your skills and it is a lot of fun to see what others did for their assignment.

Each session lasts two hours, it doesn’t matter your skill level, there will be beginners to advanced photographers.

After you register you'll receive an immediate confirmation which will contain the Zoom link.

Four sessions, $125

Free seminar on how to photograph the upcoming solar eclipse
For me there's nothing more exciting than seeing and photographing a total solar eclipse. I can't wait to go to Texas and experience the eclipse April 8. I have a workshop planned and it filled up in one day. But I want others to experience the eclipse and not worry about the photography so I'm doing a free online seminar Feb. 2 to talk about how to prepare for and photograph the big day. You can register at https://lorenphotos.com/product/eclipse-seminar/
