Touring New York City
I've been spending a lot more time in New York City getting ready for all the workshops I have planned. The first one with my 12-passenger Sprinter van was Saturday night and it was great fun. Trying anything new is always a bit nerve wracking for me but I did a lot of planning and test runs and everything went smooth. My friend and fellow photographer Ron Lake helped out with scouting and driving the van while I worked with clients to get some great shots at all of our locations. It sure is easier to be dropped off than trying to get around in the city on my own. I look forward to many more trips to many places, not only New York. You can read more about the first NYC tour on my blog at https://lorenphotos.com/2018/09/30/exploring-new-york-city-at-night/
Doing street photography in the city
I'm not only doing night workshops in New York, I'm also doing a street photography workshop on Nov. 11. New York is filled with great people to photograph and I found this guy, Paul, who is a friend to all things pigeon. He is a regular in the parks and the birds are pretty happy when he comes around because he brings lots of food for them. I didn't count how many birds he had sitting on him but there wasn't room for many more. There are some more photos from the street on my blog at https://lorenphotos.com/2018/09/21/new-york-has-gone-to-the-pigeons/
You can still get to Iceland in 2019
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed my three trips to Iceland for workshops this year. I have two more planned for next year, the first in February and then in August. I know many people think that Iceland in winter must be brutal but where we go it really isn't. It will be colder in Vermont because the coast of Iceland gets warm currents from the gulf stream. I'm working with a local tour company to take us to a unique ice cave where we will have a good amount of time to explore and make some special photos. It is hard to explain how amazing it looks inside an ice cave, which is carved during the summer by water running through a glacier. The water stops running running in the winter leaving behind polished ice that glows blue/green as the light comes through it. We will also be chasing the Northern Lights each night, they can be spectacular and really exciting to see and photograph. No matter how many times you've seen them, each time they are different and amazing and I'll show you how to capture the beauty.

I'll also be hosting an Iceland workshop in August, another great time to be in Iceland. The country looks different each season, and even though you can't go into ice caves, the landscape is green and we'll photograph cute puffins.

Autumn in the northeast
Autumn is a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Fortunately I get to spend a lot of time out in the beauty, one of the marvelous perks of being a photographer. Vermont is my favorite place, the many maple trees turn bright red and orange at the same time making for a spectacular landscape. As always, this year's Vermont Fall Foliage Workshop sold out early. I have people coming from the Netherlands, Ecuador, California, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut. After the leaves are gone the color moves south so I am doing one day autumn workshops in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Ron Lake, who lives in CT is leading on a great tour off the beaten path on Oct. 28 where he has found pink, blue, red and green barns. It is always fun to have Ron along. Then I will take folks to beautiful Bucks County, PA, on Nov. 4 to some hidden gems like the mill above and a cool old tower where we will get an above the trees view of the countryside. I hope you can join me this fall!
Live online Lightroom classes are just like being in the room
My online learning sessions have become quite the hit. Many online classes are recorded so you can't ask questions or get any feedback but I use a high quality live service so your experience is just like being in the classroom but you don't have to leave your house! You will see my computer screen and can talk with me at any time. If you are close to Somerville, NJ, then you can attend in person, whichever works best for you. I've said it before, but if you haven't mastered Lightroom or a similar program, then you aren't getting the most out of your images. Lightroom has become the standard for image processing and since all images now need some post processing, knowing Lightroom is as important as knowing your camera. I have a three session Learning Lightroom class Oct. 22, 29 and Nov. 5 where you will learn how to get going with Lightroom including organizing your images and making your photos pop. If you are already familiar with Lightroom but want to get more from it I have an Advanced Lightroom class on Nov. 18. I hope you can join me for one of the classes.

Few spots still open for amazing 2019 Italy workshops
Friend and fellow photographer Ron Lake and I are heading to Italy twice in 2019. First we go to Venice during the most exciting time of year, Carnival! The workshop will feature the beauty of Venice at Carnival time, models wearing masks all around the city ready to be photographed and a spectacular fireworks show on the final night. The bridges over the canals are lit and make for brilliant color night photos. If you want to have some real fun and make great pictures, join us Feb. 28-March 6, 2019. Read More... Then we are going to Tuscany in May when red poppies are growing everywhere making the countryside look different than during the summer with the wheat fields. We did a Tuscany workshop two years ago and we'll go back to the best places but we're adding places Florence and Chiante. Read about the details here..

The trick to great fall foliage photos

The first few times I photographed fall foliage I came away pretty disappointed with my photos. It took a lot of thinking and studying what I shot but I finally came up with why I wasn't getting what I wanted. I was trying to get everything I saw into one shot. That is very tough to do, so now I work hard to get a strong center of interest in the shot and photograph the essence of the scene and not the whole scene. In the photo above the entire hillside is covered with beautiful, colorful leaves but it wasn't until I let the island be the center of interest and the hillside the background did I get a photo that works. Being there at sunrise when there was nice fog didn't hurt but this shot would look great even without the fog. Don't try to get everything you see into the photo, stop and really think about what has captured your attention, find a strong center of interest and you'll be happier with your photos.
