Photographing an old sugar shack
One of the cool things about having a photo gallery is meeting different people each day. We get a lot of tourists in Woodstock and a good portion of the folks coming through the gallery are from out of town. The locals come by also and it is good to get to know more of the people living near me. Then there are the people who have a second home here. I did that for 14 years before finally making the move a couple of years ago. One couple I recently met live in California and have a lovely home on a dirt road just outside the village. I drive or ride my bicycle past their property quite often and have ogled an old sugarhouse that is near the road. Since it is on private property, and I don't like to trespass, I've only admired it from the road. Long ago the building was used to boil down sap to make maple syrup, thus the sugary name. Well the California couple were thrilled that I would want to photograph it and said I could do it anytime. One morning this week it was foggy so I thought that might be a good time to explore the old structure. I like having a little fog in the trees, I didn't want it to be completely socked in, that might make it too creepy. I think this will be a great shot too when there's snow covering everything.
Going to Namibia
In my newsletter last month I teased to a workshop in Namibia next Sept. The details have be worked out and it is going to be an exciting trip. We're going to see amazing landscapes, colorful sand dunes, unique trees, welcoming local people and then there's the wildlife: giraffes, white rhinoceros, elephants, cheetahs, lions, leopards and more. I'm only taking eight participants and it is more than half full already so take a look and see if it is right for you. https://lorenphotos.com/mevents/namibia-landscape-and-wildlife-photography-workshop/
I can't get Iceland out of my mind
Iceland has a strange allure for me, it keeps calling me back. There is something about the landscape that keeps me challenged and interested. I have been there nine times in the past several years and I am going twice next year, once in the winter and again in the summer. I'm often asked which season I like best and it is a toss up. It looks quite different in winter and summer. You'd think there would be a ton of snow and blistering cold, but it isn't that way along the coast. In the winter it is actually warmer in Reykjavik than in Vermont and there is usually very little snow unless you head to the interior. Going inside a large ice cave in a glacier is always a thrill and watching the northern lights flicker in the sky is an unforgettable sight. In the summer the island is lush and green and the fun little puffins make for a humorous time. Fortunately I don't need to pick a favorite, I just go both times of year. My winter workshop is sold out but I still have openings in August. Check it out at https://lorenphotos.com/mevents/iceland-summer-photography-workshop-aug-2023/
