Print of the Month: Preening Egret
As always, I give a 20% discount to anyone purchasing my Picture of the Month. After the month is over, the price goes up. I photographed the May 2014 Print of the Month in Florida last spring. I am amused how a Great Egret’s face turns neon green and long plumes grow from its back during breeding season and then once they get their mate, they go back to being one plain white color. You can purchase the print on LorenPhotos.com.
Special time at the Olympics
My friend Charles Morgan has become part of our family, joining us for most holidays and birthday celebrations. He loves to come over and have the dogs lick him and beat me in dominoes. I went to watch him at another Special Olympics last week as he won two more medals for the display case I made for him. Its fun to watch him tear down the track in his electric wheelchair and then show off his gold medal.

A summer of art shows

My summer is filling up with art shows. I’m doing at least two a month, starting next week in Scarsdale, NY, a suburb north of NYC and then heading out to Montauk on Long Island for Memorial Day Weekend and I’ll be back in the Hamptons for the long 4th of July weekend.

I have been accepted at high-end shows in Rhode Island, Vermont, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut through August. The complete list of shows and dates is on the right, I hope you stop by if I am in your area. You can always see where I will be on my website, www.LorenPhotos.com.

Meetup group has over 350 members
I started a New Jersey Meetup.com photography group in June 2012 and it has grown to over 350 members. I really enjoy going out and shooting with amateurs, it is a completely different atmosphere than when shooting with pros. I’m rather competitive, but I don’t feel any pressure when out with the meetup group, I can just shoot what I enjoy and help them improve their photography.
Still room in Vermont
With all the art shows, I’m not doing many workshops this summer. Again this year I have people coming from all over the country to learn while shooting spectacular Vermont during my fall foliage workshop, those California folks like coming up north in the fall! One gentleman is coming to the workshop as a Christmas present from his two sons. I think is a great present. I still have a couple of openings but I’m sure it will sell out soon. Read More

Shooting sunset (or sunrise)
With the nice weather upon us, many people are thinking about photographing sunsets Or sunrises, which I prefer. But they don’t always look the way we think they should when we load the images into our computer. Having the sun filtering through a few clouds makes the picture more dramatic. A cloudless sunset is usually pretty boring. And it always helps to have something in the foreground, a shot of the sun setting over the water usually lacks an element or two in the image.

If I want the sun to be big in the picture, I use as long a telephoto as I can. This shot from my Meetup last Sunday was done with a 70-200mm lens with a 2X teleconverter giving me a 400mm lens. Then to add extra drama, make something a silhouette in the foreground, it adds that extra wow factor. And your exposure usually needs to be darker than you think. I meter right above the sun to get the sky good and dark. Unless the sun is peeking through fog, it will usually come out a white circle even when it looks yellow to your eye. There isn’t much you can do about that.
