Subject: LorenPhotos March newsletter

OK, April 4th is not March, but who's counting? One of these months I'll catch up and get the newsletter out on time.

I just got back from an amazing trip to Iceland. It is an incredible place and the workshop was wonderful. I had a great group of people who braved some windy conditions to get out and make some really nice photos. If you would like to see some of their photos I have a Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/353760995033618/ where some of them have posted photos. I know some of the other people are still processing photos, so more are coming.

When we were on the beach above the wind was blowing at least 30 mph, which wasn't the strongest we felt. Many beaches are made of black sand, which makes for great photos. The sand is finer than regular sand and with the strong wind it really whips around. One woman in our group spent a good deal of time on top of some black sand dunes and when she got back to the bus she looked like a raccoon. The blowing sand had stuck to her makeup around her eyes and mouth creating rather humorous large black circles.

As always, I wrote a bunch of blog posts about the trip and you can read them on my website at https://lorenphotos.com/posts/. The last post, https://lorenphotos.com/2018/03/16/ill-see-you-again-soon-iceland/ has a gallery of my photos from the adventure.

I've added yet another Iceland trip in August
Iceland was so cool I decided to host another workshop in July. I put that together and announced it only to this newsletter list and it was filled in four hours. So I'm going again in August! Just like the July trip I'm taking only six people. I haven't officially announced it but is half full already. If you'd like to go jump on it fast. You can get all the details at https://lorenphotos.com/mevents/iceland-summer-photo-workshop/. It will be another fun trip with many great photo opportunities.

I'll do another workshop in Iceland this winter focusing on the northern lights and going into ice caves. I'm putting the details together now.

Venice in March, Tuscany in May 2019
Once again I'm teaming up with friend Ron Lake and we're heading to Italy twice in 2019. First it is to Venice during the most exciting time of year, Carnival! The workshop will feature the beauty of Venice at Carnival time, models wearing masks all around the city ready to be photographed and a spectacular fireworks show on the final night. The bridges over the canals are lit and make for brilliant color night photos. If you want to have some real fun and make great pictures, join us Feb. 28-March 6, 2019. Read More... Then we are going to Tuscany in May when red poppies are growing everywhere making the countryside look different than during the summer with the wheat fields. We did a Tuscany workshop two years ago and we'll go back to the best places but we're adding places Florence and Chiante. We are putting together the final details and should announce the trip in the next week or so.
Photography Get-A-Way weekend in Vermont
Going to a place that is high action is fun but just slowing down, thinking only about photography and making pictures is a welcome break. And Vermont is the perfect place to do it! So I'm hosting a weekend where we can just relax and think about photography. You can read more about it here.
Shooting the stars and light painting workshop
Get away from city lights and explore photographing at night, astrophotography and light painting during my Night Skies and Light Painting Workshop Aug. 2-5. You don’t have to head out west to find darkness, we’ll go to remote Vermont locations that offer tremendous views of the sky. I have mastered the technique of light painting: using flashlights to illuminate large objects in the dark. The combination of stars and light painting make for incredible images. Get more details
Art show season starts this month

Showing my work at art shows is a fun way to get out and meet people and get feedback about my images. I'm not doing as many this year, I've decided not to travel as much so I can spend more time with my wife Robin. I'm mainly doing shows near my homes in NJ or Vermont and a few select others. My tentative schedule is on the right and constantly updated at https://lorenphotos.com/about-loren-fisher-photographer/art-shows/. Please stop by and say hello if you are near one of them.

Finding your inspiration
Many people think photography is all about the technical stuff, how the camera works, f/stops and shutter speeds. That is important, you must know your equipment and how to quickly make adjustments to make your photos look the way you want them. But the real secret to good photography is to be an inspired photographer.

Being excited is a lot more fun than making pictures only because you spent a lot of money on equipment and feel guilty not using it. This is my 40th year of being a professional photographer and I have gone through long periods when I just didn't feel like shooting anything. But right now I'm as excited to get out and shoot as I have ever been because I'm hosting workshops

Inspiration either comes from within or externally. I find that when I'm around other photographers, no matter their level or skills, I get fired up. And it isn't just photography, anything in life is more exciting when it is shared with others. While I love showing my photos and seeing the reaction of others, I also love being with people in great locations. Just watching them take in the scenery and enjoy getting away from real life for a little while, whether it is for a couple of hours or for a week, makes me want to shoot more and better. When you're not feeling inspired try gooing out shooting with others. If you don't know who to go out with join a camera club or if you're not a joiner, try a Meetup.com photography group. They tend to be less formal than camera clubs, many have free photo walks and you don't have to attend meetings and feel like an outsider.

Of course, I think workshops are a great way to get inspired. It works for me!
