Goodbye to a dear friend
Lots of things in life just aren't fair and losing good people tops the list. Last week we lost one of the strongest people I've known. Marilyn Dillon was a co-worker and friend and a source of strength for a long time. Dillon, as she preferred to be called, fought many courageous battles the last 13 years but always had that devilish grin, ready to toss out a dry quip. When I hit a bump I often think of her determination and grit and wonder “What would Dillon do?” As the tears run down my face I smile. I’m lucky to have known her and Brian Horton and her force will be with me forever.

I could write a ton about Dillon but Brian put together a wonderful obit that says it all. He posted it on the weekly blog he has faithfully written keeping the world updated on Dillon’s progress during her many battles. It is quite the tribute: https://marjourneyback.blogspot.com/
Free online seminars and half price workshops

I don't need to tell you how crazy this pandemic is, who would have thought that life could be changed so fast? One thing that I know is that photography is good for the mind, immersing yourself for a while in anything creative is a stress reliever. I'm putting together free online seminars to help keep our creative minds busy. Plus I'm doing more extensive online workshops and I've cut the normal price of those in half. I want to get as many people involved as possible. I want to point out a couple in particular. I have Beth Payner, an expert in resilience management who happens to be an amateur photographer giving us a free presentation on April 15 at noon EDT about using photography and being resilient to get through these times. It should be a great session, for anyone, not just photographers. Click here for more info. I'm doing a fun three session workshop starting April 13 that I call Novice Photography Series, which is about really getting to know and understand your camera. The series helps you feel comfortable with all aspects of your camera, thus making photography more fun.

This Saturday is a four hour workshop about taking Lightroom to the next level, a great way to improve your Lightroom skills. Thursday is a free live Lightroom editing session, you send me a photo and I'll edit it so you can see how I would make it look. April 9 is a free seminar on converting your photos to Black & White. I'm planning many more topics and will be doing several a week as long as we are locked down. See below on how to keep updated.
Stay updated on my seminars and workshops
With all of the seminars and workshops I'm scheduling, I realized I needed an easy way for people to keep updated about the new offerings. Like I said in the previous item, during this time of crisis I'm doing many free online seminars and half price workshops, some of them on fairly short notice. You can now sign up for a quick email update whenever I post new seminars or workshops. Like my main newsletter, I'll never share your email address and you'll only get one update per day, if I post something new that day. It only takes a few seconds to sign up, go to https://lorenphotos.com/newsletter-sign-up/. And no, I won't be blowing smoke...
Cuba was a strange experience
A couple of weeks ago I led a workshop to Cuba. The virus was just starting to become widespread in the U.S. but really hadn't hit Cuba much. There was much angst about whether to go or cancel it. I went down a couple of days before the workshop was scheduled to start and at that point a couple of people had decided not to go. Then President Trump declared a national emergency and several more people cancelled. We decided to forge ahead and ended up with four people coming and we had a great time. We went through a lot of hand sanitizer and did our best to stay away from crowds but the people on the street couldn't have been friendlier and weren't at all concerned about the virus, although they knew about it. We made lots of great photos but the virus was always in the back of our minds. As it got worse in the U.S. and everything was shutting down I decided to cut the workshop short by two days. Everyone agreed it was a good decision and I've never gone through Newark airport so fast and easy. Cuba was exciting and I'm planning return trips.
Hanging out in Vermont
While waiting for this pandemic to clear up, I'm spending my time in Vermont, along with my wife Robin. I'm usually here when I don't have to be some place else and it is a peaceful place to get away from the rat race. Robin has been staying away from me in case I picked up the virus in Cuba. (I didn't) And I'm staying away from her in case she got the virus in N.J. (She didn't) It is strange to not hug and to sleep in separate bedrooms for two weeks, but we are both sleeping better! We were happily greeted with a foot of snow last Monday so I got out and enjoyed the beautiful gift I was given. I had many things I needed to do to restructure my business and I didn't stay out as long as I would have like to but a couple hour walk was great for the mind.
Mentoring special
One of the things I really enjoy doing is working directly with photographers to help them improve their images, whether is technical, composition, post processing or whatever. Mentoring sessions are custom made for whatever photographers want to work on. I've long done personal mentoring and coaching sessions but frankly they aren't cheap. During this crisis I'm offering a price of $225 for five two hour sessions to be used by the end of May. Normal price is $489. Hourly consultation has been cut to $35 from $75. Proper exposure
Getting the right exposure for your photos can be tricky at times. Modern cameras have made allowing the right amount of light into your camera more accurate but have also made it more complicated. There are several exposure modes that you can choose from and they each do a different thing. Evaluative or matrix looks at the entire scene to determine what the proper exposure should be. Center weighted looks at the middle of your picture while spot metering looks at a very small portion to help you get the right settings. Which is best depends on the scene you are shooting. An evenly lit scene that doesn't have a large portion of light or dark in the scene will do best with evaluative/matrix. If your subject is standing in bright light and the rest of the scene is dark, then maybe center weighted. A heavily backlit scene where you want to bring out the detail of the subject may do best with spot metering. It isn't easy and I have to admit I rarely change my metering modes, leaving it on evaluative, which is what Canon calls it while matrix is Nikon's term. Whatever mode I'm using, I know the meter is frequently fooled and I need to make adjustments to the suggested setting to make my final image either brighter or darker than what the camera says is correct. I just did seminar about exposure and you can watch the video at https://lorenphotos.com/exposure-modes-free-seminar-video/
