Print of the Month - Snow Fence
It has been a snowy, cold winter and I love it. I really enjoy how landscapes become simple, clean compositions when I look hard. I shot this at a Vermont farm last month a couple of days after heavy rain pounded the deep snow. I love the lines the rain created in the snow and the way the fence disrupts the scene.
A good morning to be out
I was treated to a stunning sunrise yesterday in Bridgewater, VT. I drug my butt out of bed at 4 a.m. to shoot star trails and then went to a favorite location for sunrise. I got an amazing show of color for about 10 minutes just before the sun came up over the mountains. The photos came out good but I was thankful to just be able to be there that day. Night photography and Light & Composition workshops coming
My favorite workshops are coming this spring. It starts with a night photography workshop this Friday night in Somerville, NJ. Shooting at night is a great way to get out and shoot when you days are packed with other stuff. Then I'm doing the fun Getting the Most out of Lightroom workshop in Vermont followed by the popular Composition and Light workshop in NJ. In this two-day workshop we get away from the technical things that too many photographers get wrapped in and we talk about what really matters: how to see photos. We get heavily into composition and how light affects our photos. There is some classroom time but we get out and shoot and then do a final critique.

In May is a Beyond the Basics workshop in Vermont. Whether you are in Vermont or need a short get-away, this workshop will help you build on your photographic knowledge and start to think about photos like the pros do.

Upcoming Art Shows
I have 15 shows on the plan for this year from May through Oct. The official acceptances haven't gone out yet, so the schedule is still flexible. I hope to see you at a show or two.
Exposing at night
One the keys to photos at night is to add light where needed. Many times we just shoot what is there but adding some light of your own can make a big difference. It doesn't require tons of equipment, just imagination and experimentation. This show of a covered bridge was lit with a flashlight. I did a 30 second exposure and walked around shining my little flashlight on the end of the bridge and the fence. It took several attempts to get it right but checked the each exposure on of the back of my camera and then made adjustments.
