Hanging out with a living legend

As we head into a new year, I’ve been thinking a lot about what keeps me inspired. Over the weekend I had the chance to visit Clyde Butcher at his darkroom and gallery in Venice, Florida. Clyde is a legend in the world of black-and-white landscape photography, and seeing his giant prints and massive darkroom reminded me how powerful photography can be when it's grounded in passion and patience.

Clyde isn't exactly a spring chicken and a few years ago a stroke slowed him down a bit, but even after all he’s been through, Clyde’s love for the land and for making images is still going strong. That kind of dedication is contagious.

This year, I’m carrying that inspiration with me, slowing down, paying attention, and making space for the things that matter.

Here’s to a year of seeing with intention.

My favorite photos from 2025

Looking back on 2025 I’m struck by how many quiet moments shaped the year. From the streets of Havana to Iceland’s shifting light and Oregon’s misty coast these images remind me why I pick up a camera. It wasn’t just the big landscapes but the small scenes the unexpected connections and the light that stopped me in my tracks.

I wrote a bit about what made these images special and shared a slideshow you can explore any time. I hope these photos make you want to slow down, notice the light around you and think about your own photography in fresh ways. Thanks for following along and here’s to more good light in 2026.

Photography fun without leaving the house

This winter, let’s keep our cameras warm and our eyes curious. I’m excited to offer a four-session Indoor Winter Photography Workshop: Exploring the Familiar that meets online via Zoom. We’ll slow down and find inspiration right where we live, using light, color, shadow, and emotion to make meaningful images at home or nearby. Each session includes a creative lesson, a fun assignment, and the chance to share your work and get feedback in a supportive group setting. Whether you shoot with a DSLR, mirrorless, or a phone, this workshop is designed to help you see the familiar in a fresh way and build your creative confidence. All skill levels are welcome. The sessions run Wednesdays, Jan. 28 through March 18, from 7 to 9 p.m., and will be recorded if you can’t make a live class. Black & White workshop to help you see differently

Black and white photography isn’t just a style it’s a way of seeing. It changes how you look at light, shape, and shadow and influences every decision behind the camera and in editing. In this online workshop we’ll explore how to think in black and white and create images that feel strong and intentional. Over three live sessions I’ll show you techniques for visualizing in monochrome, making smart composition choices, and editing in Lightroom to bring out the best in your photos. We’ll have weekly assignments and group feedback so you can grow your skills and build confidence. If you’ve ever wondered why some photos work beautifully in black and white and others don’t, this is a great way to sharpen your eye and explore a classic approach to photography. Join me on Mondays February 23, March 9, and March 23 on Zoom. All sessions are recorded, so you won’t miss a thing if you can’t make it live.
