Art show season starting
One sure sign of summer looming is that acceptances start coming for art shows. I’m only going to do about 10 this year, I did almost twice as many last year and it nearly killed me! The season starts with a little warm up show in Somerville, NJ, on Sunday, April 26, then I’m going to Verona, NJ, May 16 & 17 and in June heading down to Virginia Beach, VA. Then I’m out on Long Island in Amagansett for the Fourth of July weekend. See the complete list on my website or just look to the right.

Print of the Month: Venice Pier

While in Florida during my workshop last month, we went to the large pier in Venice at sunset. It is fun to shoot on the west coast of Florida because of the spectacular sunsets. But I love the time after the sun goes down before total darkness sets in. I wandered under the pier while there still was a little light in the sky and did a long exposure to make the water smooth. Light from the pier created the funky orange glow.

Photo Adventure in D.C.

We had a great workshop in Washington, D.C., last weekend during the Cherry Blossom Festival. The weather was great and blossoms were at full peak. It is a beautiful sight to see the trees lining the Tidal Basin and in the parks around the city. We went to Arlington National Cemetery and the Iwo Jima Memorial, which are always great photos, but they also gave me added appreciation for how lucky I am to live where I do and have the freedom to be a photographer. You can see some more photos on my blog.
Heading north to Acadia and, of course, Vermont
I have a fun workshop planned for Acadia National Park in Maine June 1-5. There isn’t a prettier place in the country than Acadia with its unique coastline and beautiful light. Then there is my favorite workshop, fall foliage in Vermont. I’m doing two sessions this year, so you can come for five days or four days. It always makes great pictures.
Still love
Black & White

When I was learning how to be a photographer, I shot entirely
Black & White images, it is how I learned to see and work a camera. I’ve been doing more Black & White recently and decided to do a workshop April 24 and 25. There is still room for two more people, so hurry and sign up.

Guatemala in 2016

One thing I love about doing workshops is the people I meet. Last year at the Vermont Fall Foliage Workshop, I had a special guest, Edgar Monzon from Guatemala. We hit it off like old friends, so this winter I approached Edgar about doing a workshop in Guatemala. He had been kind enough to present me with a photography book he did on his home country and the photos of the culture and scenes are amazing. So Edgar has put together an itinerary of beautiful places and will be our guide for a week in March of 2016. Guatemala doesn’t get the publicity, but the people are friendly, the areas we are visiting are safe and the culture is welcoming. It will be a special trip. I hope you can join us. Read more...
Florida Photo Adventure

Last month was my photo workshop in Florida, which was a great break from the long cold winter up north. It took a couple of days to get acclimated to the 90 degree temperatures, but I struggled through it! I'm not a big bird photographer but I enjoy seeing youngsters on the nest. These egret chicks make me laugh and amazed that they grow up to be beautiful birds. See more Florida photos

Using a Neutral Density Filter
You’ve seen those photos where a super-long shutter speed was used to get smooth, silky water while the sun is shining. To get that milky look, you usually need a shutter speed longer than two seconds, which can’t be done in bright sunlight. So photographers must reduce the amount of light coming into the lens and that is done with a neutral density filter. The filter don’t change anything other than how much light comes through the front of the lens. There are some variations, such as color ones or ones that don’t cover the entire filter, called split neutral density. They come in different amounts and you can even buy rather expensive ones that vary the amount of density from none to nearly no light coming through. I wrote a more detailed explanation on my blog.
