Subject: Indoor workshop session 3 video and challenge

Hello,

Thanks for a great session, it is so much better when there is group participation!

The video from the third session is at https://youtu.be/Blj_Ol-5TRE.

Session 2 is at https://youtu.be/5veBHOlgS1A

Sesion 1 is at https://youtu.be/nnFc2QV35w8

There are two challenges for our final meeting.

One is to create a Shadow Study. The challenge is to make images where shadow is at least 30% of the picture. Think about creating shape, separation or mood with the shadows. Remember that you are not hunting for subjects, you are hunting for depth.

And I also threw down a hard challenge - A Layer Study using shadows to create the layers. You should have:

  • A clear foreground element

  • A defined subject in the midground

  • A supportive background

  • Shadows that help separate at least two layers

Talk about intentional! You're really going to need to think and plan this one. But it could be as simple as having a dark area in the foreground, have your subject in a brighter midground and then a dark background. But you don't want the foreground and background to go black, you should have supportive elements in each. Remember that you can have more than three layers too.

This is all to think about what to do if your photographs feel flat. Don’t add more things, add intention to layers. Let shadows do the work.

Email one photo to me from each challenge by noon on March 17.

We'll see you for the final session March 18 at 7:00 EST.
