Subject: Feb. LorenPhotos newsletter

I know the calendar says today is March 1, but since I didn't get my February newsletter out yesterday, I prefer to think this is a leap year and today is Feb. 29, so I'm not late.

In last month's newsletter I talked about photographing colliding water drops and I've been spending a good deal of time making more splashes and capturing the collisions. Every splash is different and I'm getting some great results and I've had several workshops with more to come. Click here to see more water drop photos.

Speaking of workshops, I love working with photographers and I have some pretty exciting ones planned. Whenever possible I'm doing workshops online while I have people in attendance. I'm using a great service that has high quality video and audio, so it is just like being at the workshop in person.

I'm thrilled to be heading to Iceland next week for a sold-out workshop, it has been high on my list for a long time. I'm also hosting a workshop in Maine's Acadia National Park in June. That workshop is also sold out but since it's one of my favorite places, I'm sure I'll have another there next year. I mentioned last month the Cape May Photographic Creativity Workshop I'm hosting May, it will be a great weekend for photographers to concentrate on their photography and looking at the world in a different. I have several other exciting workshops scheduled and more in the works.

Venice during Carnival 2019
I'm teaming up with friend Ron Lake again and this time we're heading to Venice, Italy, during the most exciting time of year, Carnival! The workshop will feature the beauty of Venice at Carnival time, models wearing masks all around the city ready to be photographed and a spectacular fireworks show on the final night. The bridges over the canals are lit and make for brilliant color night photos. If you want to have some real fun and make great pictures, join us Feb. 28-March 6, 2019. Read More...
Photography Get-A-Way weekend in Vermont
Sometimes we just need to get away from everything, let our mind clear and play photographer. And Vermont is the perfect place to do it! So I'm hosting a weekend where we can just relax and think about photography. You can read more about it here.
Shooting the stars and light painting workshop
Get away from city lights and explore photographing at night, astrophotography and light painting during my Night Skies and Light Painting Workshop Aug. 2-5. You don’t have to head out west to find darkness, we’ll go to remote Vermont locations that offer tremendous views of the sky. I have mastered the technique of light painting: using flashlights to illuminate large objects in the dark. The combination of stars and light painting make for incredible images. Get more details
Winter in Vermont is special

My annual Vermont Winter Wonderland Workshop was in early February and, as always, Vermont was beautiful, snow covered and I had a great group of people at the sold-out workshop. It is always a thrill to give people a new experience and for some in the group it was the first time they've walked on water - a frozen lake. We photographed people ice fishing, beautiful farm scenes and covered bridges. I wrote about the fun weekend on my blog.

Thinking in Black & White
I probably shot 7,000 rolls of black & white film before shooting 100 rolls of color back in the day as a newspaper photographer. I still see and think black & white and then my mind adds color to the scene, which is why many of my color images have a strong graphic component. Consistently making a beautiful black & white photo requires more than just clicking a button in your computer or making a menu selection in your camera. It is a thought process from inception to output of your final image. I look for shapes, lines and strong graphic elements while I'm shooting and then I know if there is contrast I'll get a good black & white photo in the end. I have a black & white workshop April 28 where you can explore the B&W process.
