Subject: Correction: Indoor workshop session 2 date

It is good to see that you read my email! I had the wrong date for the next session, it is Jan. 21, as advertised. Sorry for the confusion

Again, the Session 1 video recording is at https://youtu.be/4TRB_PlvVVg?si=9V6X_wXBQjf6tgai

These are 10 things to think about when making a picture:

  • What is the subject?

  • What is the center of interest?

  • Where is the light coming from?

  • How do I emphasize the center of interest? Lens, aperture, shutter speed

  • Where is the center of interest in the frame?

  • Am I close enough to my subject to emphasize it?

  • Am I too close to lose context? A sense of place and time

  • Are there any distractions in the frame? Look at all four corners. This is another place a tripod helps with composition.

  • Is there a better place to make this image? It could be two inches to the left, or higher or lower. distortions.

  • How will the viewers’ eye move through the image? Composition

Here are our challenges

Challenge #1: Make sure you know what happens when you move the dial near the shutter button. Does it change your shutter speed or aperture? What happens when you move it to the left? Practice doing it two minutes each day and it will be second nature.

Challenge #2

Depth of field still life

  • Use a 50mm lens

  • Get 3 feet away from a flower or something not moving

  • Think about our list of 10 Things

  • Shoot at f/4

  • Using the same composition, change to f/11, shoot another

Challenge #3

Creative shot using Depth of Field in your house. Get creative and photograph something with a lot of depth of field in your house. If you really want to push yourself, also shoot it with very little depth of field.

Send me one or two photo from only Challenge #3 to Loren@LorenPhotos.com. If you are comfortable resizing your images make it a jpeg 1800 pixels wide at 72 pixels per inch. It is OK if you don’t resize but please send a jpg. Remember, this isn’t a photo contest, just a fun exercise.

Bonus Challenge

Look at your camera and the first button you see that you don’t know completely, figure out what it does. You might not ever use it again, but get to know it. If you know all your buttons, find a menu item. There are plenty of things there to discover. Drop me an email with your discoveries and I’ll share them with the group. I won’t use your name.

The next session is Jan 21, 2024 06:30 PM EST at the same Zoom location.
