Best Independent Books March 12
You Are the Rock Star
by Alexander Woodrow

This book is a self-empowerment guide that gives people the tools to live out their dreams, discover their purpose, and feel damn good in the process. It enables people to transform into the new, rock-star images of themselves; to embrace the power within that they’ve always had — the power to take charge of life.

The book enables people to identify what their life dream is, how to go about getting it and how to navigate through the unwanted feelings of stress, anxiety and self-doubt to become the most epic and legendary version of themselves

The author — a founding member of rock band Our Last Night — believes we are all here to be of service and to give others the tools to rock at life. His intention is to share what he’s found to be most helpful, not just in discovering a dream, but growing it while navigating through all the challenges life throws at us.

The Phantom
by Frank Settineri

This is a realistic fantasy about Tarchon, his girlfriend Julia, hockey and a paint so black that it absorbs all the light that strikes it. Julia’s dad discovered the paint, Tarchon’s dad used it in his paintings, and his mom used it in her biological research to cure cancer. Life was serene for Tarchon and Julia until the scientists in Hanford, Washington introduced the paint into their gravitational wave detector called LIGO. Then pandemonium broke out.

The FBI and military, Homeland Security and the American and Italian governments became enraptured with it, and established covert operations resulting in stealing, cheating, lying, betraying, kidnapping and the killing of innocent people for the sake of making the world a ‘better’ place. Even though Julia and Tarchon were only teenagers, they witnessed the outrageous behavior that money, power and greed can generate, and they learned that the very same people who perpetuate those deeds do not know at all how egregious their actions are.

This story, steeped in science, romance and suspense, takes the reader on a convoluted journey to a climactic ending.

Weaving her former career as a jockey with her lessons in heart health learned after her A Fib, the author shares from her heart the shifts that can help reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease. There is no reason why more women should die of cardiovascular disease than men, and the author is determined to contribute to rectifying the situation.

She asks why we are running our lives like a six-furlong sprint race instead of as a distance race with an awareness of the appropriate pace of life? It’s time for women to slow down and pay attention to their health.

She cautions against letting fear dictate; the female entrepreneur shouldn’t hold back but must break through.

Puck
by Kevin P. White

Something wasn’t right. By the time Luke was 3 years old, we had no doubts that he was different. He never smiled, never spoke, never even babbled. He was 4 when they told us that he was autistic, and the news nearly destroyed us…

One day, Luke said the one word that would change all of our lives forever... puck. This is the amazing story of a severely autistic boy who, through the ceaseless perseverance of his parents and a small number of dedicated coaches, ultimately comes out of his previously impenetrable shell.

The change in him changes everyone around him as he transforms from a child who doesn’t even speak until he is 6 to a teenager whose inspirational achievements on the ice culminate in 19,000 hockey fans giving him a prolonged standing ovation in the nation’s capital. And it all starts with him saying one little word.

Hell to Reality:
one prisoner’s journey

by Jack Grylewicz

In 1939 in the Polish city of Torun, the journey was filled with peril. Early in the morning of one particular cloudless morning, Peter Mayer was conscripted at gunpoint by the Gestapo to be an informer. He had no choice but to leave his family in the middle of the night, and become one of many hundreds of displaced people.

In 1940, he was forced to join the Russian army. In 1941, the German army invaded Russia and Lithuanian provinces. He was captured and transferred to the infamous Stalag 18 camp. There he encountered his cousin Klaus. In 1943, Klaus and Peter escaped from Stalag 18 and fled to Olsztyn and later back to Torun. In 1945, the Russian invaders liberated Torun.

After the war, Peter had his mind set on true freedom. The Baltic Sea was the only way to freedom; this idea never left his mind. The events of this novel are loosely based on the harrowing accounts of war, persecution and an identity that never left Peter.

Ride the Universe
by Mark Rues

In 1962 on the Missouri-Kansas border, 11-year-old Teddy’s older sister Jean dies in a family outing. Teddy dreams of otherworldly moonlight lighting a dark path to reunite him with his sister. He needs allies to find his way.

He has a vision of a legendary ancient Chinese man, Fu Hsi, who encourages him to believe there is more to death than death. Teddy’s best friend, Tem, shows him ancient Egyptian crystals that flash strange lights of blues, greens and reds. Fu Hsi teaches the boys through dreams the way of the ancients; how life transforms under the powers of the crystals. The boys believe the crystals may hold powers to the mysteries of life.

Together, they have to decide if they should test Fu Hsi’s wisdom and travel the path of darkness and light. But whatever they decide, that moonlight beckons Teddy to find Jean.

The story and the way it proceeds is reminiscent of the way Sophie’s World introduced young Sophie to the basic concepts and history of philosophy while pulling readers along for the fascinating journey. — Chanticleer
