Subject: Tips for the day you quit

Happy New Year's Friend!

Did you make a New Year's resolution to quit smoking. The Learning to Quit team wants you to have the best possible chance for success. We've put together some tips to help you through the first day you quit smoking.

These ideas have worked for other smokers who have quit successfully. Pick out a few that would work for you and write them down in your Quit Plan. (Don't have a quit plan yet? Download a template here.)

Remove as many triggers as possible.
  • Make sure all cigarettes are destroyed. Do not keep any in your possession.
  • Get rid of all smoking reminders such as lighters, ashtrays, etc.
  • Avoid your favorite smoking spots.
  • Brush your teeth frequently.
Enlist support from the people helpful to you.
  • Talk to an ex-smoker or two. Find out how they stopped.
  • Talk to a friend or relative about the support you will need as you quit.
  • Reach out to a group of others who have decided to stop smoking.
Change your usual routine.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Drive a different route to work.
  • Don’t sit in your favorite smoking chair.
  • Keep busy and give your hands something to do.
  • Eat in a different place.
  • Take a brisk walk and breathe deeply.
  • Get plenty of rest; go to bed early.
Practice thinking differently about smoking.
  • Just take it one day at a time, one hour at a time, or one urge at a time.
  • Review your want to list; remind yourself of the benefits you are gaining.
  • Remember that “just one” cigarette will undo your hard work and preparation.
  • Celebrate and reward your successes…especially the small ones.
  • Keep saying to yourself, “I am smoke free.”
We wrote Learning to Quit to provide you with the support and practical knowledge you need to live free of nicotine addiction. Want more guidance? Get the book on Amazon.

Give yourself a boost by writing down specific tactics your want to try. Writing out your intentions and goals takes your hopes and transforms them into resolve, and ultimately, into results.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2020!
