Retrofitting a 1MW Solar Farm: Boosting Efficiency with IRIV PiControl

Renewable energy, particularly solar power, has become a vital part of the global effort to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Solar farms, consisting of vast arrays of photovoltaic panels, capture sunlight and convert it into electricity, providing clean energy. However, the efficiency of these farms relies on more than just the panels; solar inverters and data loggers are equally important for smooth and efficient operations.

Let’s dive into a success story from EDA Solutions Technologies Malaysia, whereby a 1MW solar farm was retrofitted with modern technology, boosting its efficiency and ensuring future sustainability.

The 1MW solar farm was once a beacon of renewable energy, but as time went on, the monitoring system began to falter. The outdated solar inverters reached the end of their support lifespan, making it difficult to collect critical operational data. The farm struggled with decision-making and efficiency without reliable data, which ultimately affected energy output.

To overcome this challenge, the farm needed a solution that not only could restore the monitoring capabilities, but also modernize its operation and maintenance (O&M) processes.

The IRIV PiControl, powered by Raspberry Pi CM4, an industrial-grade controller developed by Cytron Technologies comes into the picture.

  • First, the team designed a system that could accurately acquire and process serial data from the aging Kaco Powador inverters by using a custom-developed Node-RED program. Node-RED’s visual programming interface was a perfect match for this project, enabling the creation of data flows tailored to the specific needs of the farm...
