Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time - C - June 16, 2013

Second Chances

Life seems to be full of second chances, but which ones are worth the risk of the chance and which ones demand we change. The story of the repentant woman showed risk and real change in lifestyle. She risked even the reputation of Jesus for her chance. And, she was rewarded for the chance she took.

TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - June 9, 2013

DAILY READINGS FOR THE TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

MP3 PODCAST In this week’s audio podcast, we discuss the risk of a second chance. It means humility and giving control to the one we offend.

FIRST READING 2 Samuel presents the story of King David’s adultery. In the verses for this reading, Nathan the Prophet confronted David on his hypocrisy and indiscretion. In response, the King acknowledged his guilt.

PSALM Psalm 32 was a prayer of confession and repentance. It also acknowledged YHWH as a protector and comforter in the sight of evil.

SECOND READING In his letter to the Galatians, St. Paul answered a burning question in his time: Can non-Jews become Christians without converting to Judaism? I answer was “Yes,” for he held that Gentiles could be saved through their faith in Christ.

GOSPEL In Luke’s gospel, a sinful woman repented at the foot of Jesus. This shocked his contemporaries, for this woman barged into a male-own party and touched the holy man (thus polluting him). Yet, Jesus used this time to teach on repentance and spiritual hospitality.

CHILDREN’S READINGS In the story for the first reading, a theft led to a confrontation and a moment of honest sorrow, just like King David experienced when he was confronted by Nathan the Prophet. In the story for the gospel, the moment of confrontation continued, but this led to forgiveness and sharing, just like the passage in Luke about Jesus and the repentant woman.

FAMILY ACTIVITY Have a family discussion on rituals of forgiveness. How do writing notes, sending flowers or making meals help people make up?
