24th Sunday in Ordinary Time - C - September 15, 2013 Finding the Lost Once in a while, we are feel lost and alone. We want a companion to listen to our pain or just sit with us in the silence. A true friend seeks us out, especially in our times of need. In this Sunday's gospel, Jesus reveals himself as that friend. STUDIES FOR THE 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME DAILY GOSPEL READINGS FOR THE 23RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS September 14 WEEKLY BLOG Are we to be fools for Christ? MP3 PODCAST In this week's audio podcast, we discuss the goal of the leader and the good of those led. FIRST READING Exodus 32 spoke to the need of a fear-filled humanity to seek control over that which is uncontrollable. God can not be manipulated by our actions; if he could, that would lead to pride. Instead, humility is needed before our Maker. PSALM Psalm 51 is THE song of repentance in the Bible. It asks for forgiveness and restoration. We are sorry, God. We want to be your children again. SECOND READING 1 Timothy 1 presents a summary of St. Paul's life. He was a sinner, but was shown mercy. With a grateful heart, Paul showed others the way to God's mercy. GOSPEL In Luke 15, Jesus used two parables to present God's notion of leadership. The leader should be reach out to the outsider, the lost sheep, as a matter of course. CHILDREN'S READINGS In the story for the first reading, Freddie paid for items his friend stole from a store. As a result, Freddie, like Moses before YHWH, saved his friend and built up his own reputation. In the story for the gospel, Jackie searched frantically for a lost cell phone. When she found it, she rejoiced, just like heaven rejoices when the lost return to God. FAMILY ACTIVITY To impress the message of this Sunday's gospel, have a “Lost Coin” scavenger hunt. |
