21st Sunday in Ordinary Time - C - August 25, 2013

Are You Saved?

There's an old punchline, “God loves you, but I'm his favorite.” I've used that line to get a smile and a chuckle, but the attitude behind the joke can be toxic, for it involves judgment. I'm saved, you're damned. Jesus railed against this attitude when he declared everyone has a chance to live in the Kingdom.

STUDIES FOR THE 20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

DAILY READINGS FOR THE TWENTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

FEAST OF ST. BARTHOLOMEW August 24, 2013

WEEKLY BLOG In the weekly blog we consider what the Church should be, a gathering of the saints or a community of sinners?

MP3 PODCAST In this week's audio podcast, we consider the question: “How do I know I'm saved?” We only know the answer moment by moment.

FIRST READING The author of Isaiah 66 promised the depressed populace of Jerusalem a renewed glory, a reputation that would draw even the Gentiles to the city and its God.

PSALM Psalm 117 praised God for his faithful, loving kindness. Is there any other reason to give glory to the Lord?

SECOND READING In the letter to the Hebrews, the author encouraged the faithful with a strange message. You know how much God loves you by the tough times you endure. Sometimes the hard times are the moments the Lord draws us closer.

GOSPEL In Luke 13, Jesus asked the question: who truly knows what pleases God?

CHILDREN'S READINGS In the story for the first reading, I liked twin brothers with vastly different personalities; it just took time to get to know each of them, like it takes time to get to know God. In the story for the gospel, Brandon found the truth about his friend Mr. Finnelly; the stories the old man told Brandon were real. The boy wondered why people just couldn't take his friend at his word. Why can't we take God at his word?

FAMILY ACTIVITY To emphasize equality in God's eyes, play the “Privilege Game” and compare the experience with Luke 13.
