Trinity Sunday – June 3, 2012

In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit

The doctrine of the Trinity marks off one of the unique features of Christianity. We believe in one God with three Persons, Father, Son, and Spirit. We believe God is a family. One nature. Three distinct persons, united in love, will and purpose.

FIRST READING Deuteronomy presented religious duty to God as more than a sign of national pride. It was more than community response. Religious duty was personal.

PSALM Why should we believe? Sometimes we have faith because of what God does for us. But ultimate faith, ultimate praise comes from a deep realization of what God is. This is song sung in Psalm 33.

SECOND READING Much of St. Paul’s theology can be reduced to one insight. We cannot make ourselves righteous in the eyes of God. That is God’s prerogative.

GOSPEL One of the clear Scriptural roots to the doctrine of the Trinity lay in the Great Commission from Matthew’s gospel. “Go, baptize in the nameof the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit...”

CHILDREN’S READINGS The narrative for the first reading, we discuss the freedom of being God’s child. In the story for the gospel, Lydia has the responsibility of recruiting new Scouts for her troop. She discovered what Jesus told his followers. Go, make followers by making friends.
