Body and Blood of Christ - B - June 1, 2015

This is My Body

The words of Jesus at the Last Supper will echo as long as Christian faith survives on the earth, for these words define his relationship with us. He came to give himself to us. We are to carry that self giving spirit to others.

WEEKLY BLOG  In this week's blog, we consider the question of sacrifice in our consumer culture.

VIDEOCAST  In this week's videocast, we look closely at the Last Supper and the Eucharist.

MP3 PODCAST In this week’s audio podcast, we explore the real meaning of commitment. The Father committed himself to us through his Son. The Eucharist is tangible proof of that commitment.

FIRST READING Exodus 24 described the ceremony that sealed the Mosaic covenant. Bulls were sacrificed; the blood of the bulls was sprinkled on the people. This seal committed the people to follow the Law, but it also showed the commitment YHWH made to his people.

PSALM Unlike modern travel by air, rail or automobile, travel in the ancient world could be dangerous. Psalm 107 thanked God for his guidance during travel and for safe arrival with a sacrifice and grateful vows.

SECOND READING The book of Hebrews looked upon the death of Christ as the supreme act of worship: a “once and for all” sacrifice. What he did two thousand years ago on the cross became transcendent; its saving effects became universal.

GOSPEL In this week’s gospel, we reflect on the Words of Institution we find in Mark’s gospel. Especially in Mark, the words Jesus spoke would play themselves out in his Passion. He gave himself to his followers. His words would echo in his death and Resurrection.

CHILDREN’S READINGS The commentary for both readings reflect on celebration and the gift of bread, a gift that nourishes and has the ability to unite us.

CATECHISM LINK In this week’s Catechism Link, we investigate the Eucharist, the bread from heaven.

FAMILY ACTIVITY There is not a better way to connect to the Eucharist that to experience bread fresh from the oven. What a great family activity!
