Presentation of the Lord – February 2, 2014

The Gift God Gives

The Feast of the Presentation commemorates a visit of the Holy Family to the Temple. There, Joseph and Mary would present YHWH with her first-born son, Jesus. The event reminds us of the grace God pours on us, so we can offer it back to him, with changed hearts and changed lives.

FIRST READING From the prophet Malachi, we heard words that challenged his audience to change, to give to God what rightfully belongs to him. He will purify the faithful, so they will give what pleases the Lord.

PSALM Psalm 24 was a call and response song that recognized YHWH's place and demanded a pure heart from the worshiper.

GOSPEL In Luke;s gospel, Mary and Joseph came to the Temple to give YHWH the best they had, the best God gave them and the world, her Son, the Son of God.

CHILDREN'S READINGS In the story for the first reading, Chelsea's determination to be the best inspired a team to do its best. It wasn't easy. God wants us to do our best, even in tough times so we can focus on the most important things in life. In the story for the gospel, Barndon found a broken Christmas present and cherished it because of the giver. Even though Christmas seems long past, we should remember the greatest gift of all, Jesus.

FAMILY ACTIVITY Create a “Presentation Prayer Box” with your family. Write your prayers for the week on pieces of paper and share them with family members on the feast of Presentation.
