HEAT TREATING & ETCHING, AT A GLANCE |

Harden: Heat to 1550°F and soak at least two minutes, then quench in a light oil such as peanut oil.
Temper: Hold at 350°F for one hour, then let the blade cool slowly in the oven. Repeat for a double draw. Aim for a light straw color, roughly 58 Rockwell.
Etch: Degrease with acetone, then apply a ferric chloride and water mixture (or ferric chloride and white vinegar). Neutralize with baking soda and water or Windex, then dry quickly with compressed air to prevent flash rusting.
