Last night, four astronauts left Earth orbit and began their journey to the Moon. For the first time in over fifty years, human beings are flying beyond our planet — on a mission that will take them around the Moon and back. One of them, Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen, is Canadian.
As someone who has spent forty years selling telescopes in this country, I don’t mind admitting that felt rather significant.
April is Khan Scope Centre’s 40th anniversary. We opened in 1986 — the year Halley’s Comet made its last appearance, and the space shuttle programme was still finding its feet. A lot has changed since then. The telescopes are considerably better. The eyepieces are considerably better. And apparently, we’re going back to the Moon.
To mark forty years of pointing at the sky — and last night’s rather extraordinary news — we’re offering a small celebration.

If you’ve been putting off that scope upgrade, mount, or eyepiece collection — this is a reasonable weekend to stop putting it off.
The Moon won’t be interfering much either. New Moon falls on Easter Monday, April 6th — the same night the offer expires. Dark skies, a long weekend, and four astronauts currently en route to lunar orbit. We rather like the timing.
Forty years. Thank you genuinely for being part of it.
