Many organizations give sensible financial advice, but everyone goes off and spends up large anyway! Most lottery winners are broke after a few years because they don't have the financial education to manage their funds properly. Well, don't worry--it's my job to get you winning big, AND to make sure you benefit properly from the stroke of luck that will change your life. So here's a peek at what your can expect when you win ... the very basic advice my own country's lotto commission gives winners. What To Do When You Win: --- >> Right Now 1. Deposit your prize money in an 'on call' bank account that earns you interest. 2. Decide if you want to spend some of the money straight away. How much and on what? Remember - don't make any really major purchase decisions at this stage. 3. Place the money you don't need straight away into a term deposit account (perhaps for 30 days). 4. Talk to family and close friends about what you might do (if you don't mind them knowing). 5. Decide whether you are going to get professional advice and, if so, who you are going to ask for it. Friends or family may be able to help. But remember well-intentioned but wrong advice is worse than none at all. >> One Month 1. Work out your new financial position - how much money you have, and how much you owe (for instance, on a car or mortgage). 2. Calm down - have a break - then make some decisions on what you really want to do with your money (these are your "priorities "). 3. Make a list of these priorities. 4. Visit your advisor to discuss your new financial position. 5. Review your list of priorities. 6. Begin a financial plan - this works out how much money you’ve got, and what you could do with it. 7. Make sure your will is up to date, or have a lawyer draw one up for you. 8. Look at what changes you'd like in your lifestyle. >> Three To Six Months 1. Review what has happened since your win. 2. Change your list of priorities if you need to. 3. Complete your financial plan. >> Six Months to One Year 1. Review your financial position. Get further help if you need it. 2. Ask yourself. "Am I getting what I want from my lottery win?" 3. If you’re not getting what you want, write down what’s wrong and what steps you can take to make things better. 4.
