Annie Mansfield's mother is dying and her last wish is for her daughter to be securely married. Following her mother's prompting, Annie answers an "Object Matrimony" advertisement placed by William Hanson, a businessman in Yreka. Annie's final words to her mother are a promise that she will be married and when William (called Bill) Hanson proposes marriage she quickly accepts and makes plans to leave Columbia, South Carolina for a new future in the West.

Annie is startled to find that Bill is the proprietor of the Yreka Bakery ("for the best bread in town just say it backwards!") and he is expecting her to work alongside him. The only problem is that Annie is the world's worst baker - but how can she tell her new husband?
