Subject: When Romance meets the stars

Hi Friend,

At first sight, Romance and Science Fiction seem largely incompatible genres. And for the most part they are if you examine the reader demographics of the two categories.

However, that does not prevent authors from blending the two and earning money, as you will see in our latest genre report.

In case you did not follow the story at the time: on May 22 last year, a TikTok book review video by a fan of author Ruby Dixon's Ice Planet Barbarian series went viral.

Others chimed in and posted their memes and fun videos about why it's worth reading "alien romance."

The rest is history (and a hashtag #iceplanetbarbarians with 68.1M views):

Sexy blue aliens invaded Amazon's bestseller lists. By the end of June last year, the book series...

...hit #4 in the Kindle Store,
...had 7 titles in the Kindle Top-100,
...was 3 weeks on Amazon's bestselling (Most Sold) charts!

To top it off, Berkley Publishing (part of Penguin Random House) partnered with Ruby for the print editions of the Ice Planet Barbarians series and, in the meantime, brought sci-fi romance to a broader, largely untapped audience.

What a story! Even CNN and Forbes covered it!

To the casual observer, it may seem that this success came out of nowhere and that the TikTok video was just a lucky coincidence.

I don't think so. In the southwest of Germany, where I grew up, people believe fortune favors the industrious.

Thus, it did not surprise me at all to learn that Ruby Dixon had self-published more than 90 Kindle titles, starting out with Motorcycle Club romance in 2014 and then doubling down on her Sci-fi Romance book projects.

Sci-Fi Romance was one of the first niche market reports we published back in 2016.

In the meantime, the category has grown into a significant market. Traditional publishers have left money on the table while indie authors have conquered the space (figuratively and literally).

So if you can imagine writing a story about intergalactic love, warring species, hunky alien heroes—horned, blue, purple, and fiercely protective or possessive of their women—then look no further.
