If you were publishing in 2012, you remember what Urban Fantasy felt like. It was everywhere.
Then it settled. For about a decade, worldwide search interest for “urban fantasy” ran flat at roughly half its old peak. Most people read that as a genre past its moment. I read it the other way around: ten years on a stable level without erosion is what a loyal fan base looks like.
Then, in 2025, the line moved. Over the past 18 months, interest surged past anything the genre managed in its heyday.
And some events in the industry dovetail with the Google numbers:
Two weeks ago, urban fantasy heavyweight Jim Butcher’s Twelve Months (#18 Dresden Files) took the fan-voted Dragon Award for Best Fantasy Novel. Vampires are back in prime time: AMC’s The Vampire Lestat was briefly the highest-rated series of 2026 on Rotten Tomatoes. And trad publishers Tor UK (who won a major auction) and Grand Central (who snapped it up in a two-book pre-empt) both went all-in for Ben Shepherd’s urban fantasy vampire debut Blood Drunk, out this month.
Sorting Performance from Labels
Urban fantasy is harder to measure than it looks. Amazon’s dedicated category is only two years old, and much of the genre still sits in paranormal romance, and mystery, thriller & suspense listings. And traffic runs the other way, too. The best-performing urban fantasy series of the past quarter is not by an urban fantasy author at all.
So we again used our Virtual Bestseller List approach, identifying the highest-selling Urban Fantasy books, authors and publishers over the past three months.
This is the 10th year that we monitor this market. And the category remains firmly in indie hands, with the strongest self-publishers carrying dozens of paid titles in the ranking at once.
