Know Your Farmer----JV Farms

It dawned on us last week that we do not share our story of why we are here doing this farming thing......the reasons are many.....however it is all boils down to being about the food!

The farm we are on has been in Jays family for five generations and started a homestead by his Great-Great Grandparents in the late 1800's, and has been farmed in crops such as cotton, corn, sorgum, and grass for cattle and goats.

Jays Grandfather bought the land in the 1920's from his parents, and He and his Wife started farming........they worked to build a better life for themselves and their children....they actually did not want their children to "farm"....they sent them to school, college, and wanted them to have a better life....and not be homestead farmers....lol!

So here comes the next generation......US, the Grand kids going to be farmers!

We spent our first ten years together working on a purebred cow calf operation based in Texas and in 2002 we we given the opportunity to purchase part of he original farm from Jay's parents....We did and moved to Bismarck and started working on building our "Homestead"

Both of us worked off the farm full time, Jay ironically worked in health insurance, and Val worked for a local newspaper. We lived the somewhat typical american life style.... which led both of us to a critical decision in 2008.

By that time....both of our eating habits and work schedule had allowed our health to suffer by eating on the go, easy, fast foods and not really understanding what this was doing to our health.....we both gained weight. Jay had  reached 430 ish pounds and val 330 ish pounds.....we were both looking a multiple health issues and knew a change needed to be made......

The Farm......we knew that if we could some how raised good honest clean food, make a few changes and STOP some things we were doing food wise, that we could get healthier.....that is when we started what has grown over the past ten years as what we call JV Farms Homestead

Together we have dropped 300 plus pounds, are not on any diabetic or high blood pressure meds. This does not mean we are perfect today, however. we truly feel that if changes were not made, and we would have kept the same diet and schedule as we were on,  the outcome today would be much worse for our health........

Today we grow pork the way Jay and His Grandfather did forty years ago, we have chickens that free range the homestead and lay the best eggs ever, the meat chickens are raised on grass with fresh air and sunlight, and the milk cows get to be cows. We keep a small garden and grow veggies for ourselves and extras to sell at markets during the growing season.

We invite you to visit with us about food and farming, learn from our mistakes, farm along with us, eat good clean honest food, and KNOW YOUR FARMER!

We are here to help, give ideas, and share what our journey has been. Its all about the food and being healthy!
