Adam’s Tips
2.35 Hereford – Mackelduff – 3 pts win – 3/1 (gen)
This is a classic sort of race at this time of year when a successful summer horse comes up against more traditional winter types, and I tend to side with the latter as a rule and Olly Murphy’s grey is no exception. The trainer had a good novice chase winner last week which bodes well for today, while the selection also scored first time out at Aintree last term. He failed to go on from that success, but I had viewed him on the day as a backward future chasing type, so the win came as something of a surprise. It’s good to see they are wasting no further time over hurdles and with plenty of stamina in the locker he should get the race run to suit with Midnight Jewel in the line-up. Mackelduff is used to keeping much better company than this and I’m hoping his class will pull him through.
2.55 Plumpton – En Couer – 3 pts win – 9/2 (gen)
Seamus Mullins’ eight-year-old goes round this course with his eyes closed but hasn’t been able to get his head in front since winning here off today’s mark in January. However, he tends to struggle from higher marks – his form over fences at Plumpton off 89 or lower reads 2111 – so we have to expect a big run here, especially on the back of a pleasing pipe-opener 12 days ago. Most of his opponents have had their limitations exposed, Sublime Heights has been a thorough disappointment for useful connections who go to cheekpieces to work the oracle, and while there’s a bigger run over fences to come from Stanley Pincombe, he was very novicey on his chasing debut and the selection should to be too streetwise. He’s a cracking each-way bet at current odds if you’re that way inclined but I’d expect him to be much shorter and will be backing him to win.
