Subject: To Bath... Sprint Handicap Musings

Good Morning,

Judging by my inbox a few of you decided to have an 'interest/fun' nibble on Resilience at 5s-6s, who added to the superb record of Tony Carroll and Mollie Phillips in sprint handicaps.

My 'Racing Chat' flat eyes are in ok form although having said that the wheels will no doubt come off. But since Saturday's 'through the card' from Musselburgh they've finished 1st (4/1), 1st (5/1), UP, 1st (16/1), UP, 4th, UP, UP, 1st (6/1).

4/9, 5p, +26 points, +£42 if putting £2 on them all for interest.

Not too bad, let's see if today's two from Bath can add to the fun, but as always I try and say something useful to take away, whatever they do...

Racing Chat

To Bath and the 2.20… they’ve had a bit of rain, good to soft, soft in places (possibly some more to come) which has changed my thinking slightly from when I had a quick glance last night. All the usual caveats that come with a C6 handicap! My two ‘in form’ flat pins have landed on…

Handytalk – 7/1

Kodiac Attack – 7-8/1

Handytalk… the Millman team are in decent form at the moment and they do well at Bath in 5f sprint handicaps… 4/21, 8p, +40 in the last 5 years. 3/7 when at Class 6 level.

This horse is at the exposed end but these sprint handicappers can keep going. He’s 2/9,4p at Bath, 1/1 when dropping into C6, 2/5,3p under this 7lb claimer… who has his first ride in the UK in 2 years… I’m not 100% sure where he’s been, but he knows the horse well, and that looks significant, and he won’t mind the 7lb actual weight off his back.

The horse arrives in form on the back of a good run at Chepstow, bumping into an in-form horse and he takes a drop in class here, which will help. He usually races handily and the rain is a plus for him, he is versatile, but it may slow everything else down. There’s a question over this sharp 5f but he will keep going. IF he ran his race/got the usual luck required, i’d be surprised were he out the 4.

Kodiak Attack… he looked to be coming back to form 26 days ago at Lingfield, SDS blasting out and showing plenty of speed through the race – if he does that today and chance he could get away from these. He may well have gone too hard and reported his saddle slipped early, so maybe in that context it’s even better, he wasn’t as active in the saddle as he can be.

He’s had three runs on the AW to get sharp, where he’s now 0/9, 1, and now returns to turf, 3/12,7p in career. So, on that score, he’s ‘doing something different’ as a reason to improve. They’re consistent numbers for this grade and he appears to be best when there is cut in the ground, so the rain is ideal for him. On his last turf start back in July, he bolted up under the Oisin Murphy off 4lb lower but won hard held come the line, on rain softened ground. He’s also a Course & Distance winner and used to be rated in the mid 70s. I’d like to think they’ve deliberately picked this race out given his course record.

They’ve booked Pat Dobs also, who rides this place fairly well generally, but he’s 4/13, 9p over the sharp 5f here, 2/6,5p in handicaps.

There’s a niggle about the form of the trainer but then he’s never the most prolific and the horse ran as if in form when last seen. For some afternoon interest, they’ll both do.

Of the others…

Well Vape arrives in form but I wondered if he had the pace for this 5f, for all maybe a proper bog would help him there. He is running well and no shock winner, esp if they go too hard.

The two I originally started with were two of the Tony Carrol three, probably with Windsor’s winner in mind.

Pop Dancer is interesting to a point but he hasn’t won for a while and I’m guessing a bit as to this sort of ground. He arrives in form and Carroll/Morris are 3/9,4p in the last 14 days. (team up in 4.55 also) He’s a bit wide also.

Saphire’s Moon has Millie on top, and this is a 5f sprint handicaps, so hits yesterday’s ‘micro’, and maybe for some of you that’s enough! She is only three but now a 10 race maiden (has placed x6) , first run in 215 days (but Carroll can ready them) , educated guessing as to the ground also – had the rain stayed away I may have been more interested but maybe she’ll relish it. I suppose if you also wanted change on one at double figures, she’s the most intriguing. Does have course experience. In my view she’d have to be smart on return to lower the colours of my two pokes, if they both run their race. The market may guide.

Mollie rides this place well also and on all of Tony’s horses here in the last year… 7/24, 11p, +30.

There has been money for Bluebell Time, who has won on seasonal return before and drops in class here. I thought this 5f may be sharp enough, for all the ground is fine, and she is on a mark she’s yet to defy, but there may not be much in that. Drawn in 12, not for me this time. But still the money comes.

Anyway, that’s more than enough for a C6 sprint handicap around Bath! Something I haven’t mentioned / considered will no doubt have decided today’s the day, will be in the best mood they’ve been in for a while and will romp home!

All good fun,

Best of luck if playing, Josh
