Dr Irv

Ideal Cond. 1-8 runners, OR70 or below

Form in Cond. 6,3,1,1,1 (0/32, 10 places)

Positives. He has his conditions for the first time in a while and has dropped to his last winning mark, once you take account of jockey claims. Distance and ground are fine. He also takes a drop in class.

Negatives. He has been out of form (but given these have been large fields this can be excused) and this is the 5th run for his new trainer. However his best form has been in small fields and it could be that as a horse he hates being crowded and as such a chance if yards wont necessarily affect that - unlike a rest pattern say, which can be down to how the horse was trained, which can obviously change with a change of yards.

My Verdict. 1 point win 4/1. (5/1 PP, 9/2 BV) He is 0/19, 3 places above 6/1 and so far it looks as though he will be fairly well fancied. Given his liking for small fields and prominence in the market he deserves support and hopefully he can start to show something for his in form trainer.

Maoi Chinn Tire

Ideal Cond. 1m6f-2m, Good to Firm

Form in Cond. 1,1,1,2,1,2,1 7 (0/19, 5 places)

Positives. He has his conditions again. The 7 was on his seasonal return and the way he drifted suggested it wasn't his day. He has his ground again and is 3/4 over 2m. He is also 2/5, 3 places for this jockey. He also drops into C5 (4/11 C5+C6) and is 1/8 above class 5.

Negatives. Even with the jockey claim he is 4lbs above his highest flat handicap mark. This always leaves a nagging doubt about whether the horse is running to achieve a mark that he can be competitive from. However there is some placed form which would suggest this is not insurmountable. He is 0/6, 0 places when priced over 8/1. He looks like he will go off at 10/1+ here unless he is backed.

My Verdict. 1/2 point win 10/1 (general) As I have said before if they generally have their conditions I will have something on however it feels as though this may not be his day but there are enough positives there whereby a win wouldn't be a shock. If the market is to be believed, and its importance to both horses, it will hopefully be Dr Irv's race, but  I don't think we would mind if either won.

Non Qualifiers

  • Bondi Beach Boy / Windforpower (7.15 Wetherby)
  • Hallstatt (7.45 Wetherby - he is a Notting expert, 0/26 outside of conditions, I would hope he doesn't trouble out two selections)
