Hello Friend

The phrase 'inside information' means many things to many people. I generally think it's nonsense in the sense of what you'd call 'whispers' and 'this horse will definitely win' type comments. If you've spent any time in the pubs of Newmarket you'd have 3-4 dead certs to back in every maiden/novice race!

Obviously trainers, and to a lesser extent owners, know their horses - they know why they ran the way they did last time, how they are in themselves at home and what they expect today, and why. While this isn't necessarily what i'd call 'inside information', it's the sort of information you won't find regularly in the Racing Post. 

I suppose Really Super would be an example - the RP will have a PU next to her name when she next runs, and I doubt the spotlight comment will touch on the excuse - her bloods being off post race, having got worked up, too much lactic acid in the blood, leading to 'horse cramp' - which is why she never went a yard nor jumped a fence. Sadly us owners only found that out post race and as we were not track-side, couldn't see how upset/hot she'd got. That obviously wasn't her running and if I wasn't as open as I am about her, you wouldn't know that come the next time she runs. That sort of information is useful, but it only adds context.  

The key point is that however you categorise 'inside information', you definitely DO NOT need to be on 'the inside' (whatever that is) to win at this game long term. That's the key point, despite there being a percentage of winners that will forever be impossible for us to find from the public information available. 

The puzzle is solvable without knowing how the horse is working etc. 

However, that sort of info can only help and hearing what trainers have to say about their horses can be a useful part of the punting puzzle. And an enjoyable one.
