Subject: 🟢 New Horse, Shares For Sale: A Southern Jumper

Good Evening, Friend

We've just added a new jumps horse to our growing RTPS stable, #15. We'd love for you to join us...

Pounds At The Time

This lad will be trained by Toby Lawes (ex Nicky Henderson assistant, a fine young trainer going places), who's based near Dorking, south of London. He trains from Henfold House stables, gallops that were used to train the 1996 Grand National winner, Rough Quest.

This new horse will 'predominantly' race in the south, Fontwell, Plumpton, Lingfield on his doorstep, Kempton, Sandown, Newbury not too far away. He will venture further afield occasionally of course.

We've sold nearly 50% already to existing RTPS owners in under 24 hours, however, as we own 100% of this lad, there's plenty of room left, for now. Please do share with any friends or family who may be interested...

Background/ Why him...

For the first time a horse has crossed my desk from two independent sources, who were both keeping an eye on this lad. The agents I use to help source some of ours from Ireland flagged him to me, and a couple of days later so did Toby, via his main 'go-to' Irish agent, J D Moore (who has sourced multiple graded winners), who he trusts fully, and who'd been watching this horse closely. J D soon jumped in his car for a 5h round trip to inspect this lad, and make sure he ticked all his boxes, and he was very happy with him. Toby was very keen to get him into his yard. I was keen for our first horse at Toby's to have come from his network/sources, as we obviously want him to be 100% behind any new horse. We had pondered the odd other option, but chose to hold fire, and I think our patience has been rewarded. We're very excited about this lad, for the reasons I talk through in the video, and detailed below...

Race-record -

Pounds At The Time has raced under rules three times, the first a maiden hurdle on 7th November where he generally jumped well on what was his first career start - it's always a positive when you can analyse their jumping either under rules or in a point, and he looked a natural. Connections then switched him to a NHF race at Tramore on 26th November, a run which caught a few agents' eyes, in soft/heavy ground. He was 2/11, beaten 5.5 lengths, running on, under a so-so lady amateur. This run showed he had a good attitude, enjoyed his racing and wanted to compete - but it's the subsequent form which has us excited -

He split two Willie Mullins' horses that day (always a positive in a bumper), the winner, Sortudo (a 110k 3YO), since running twice and finishing 2nd twice, the latest of those was the Grade 2 bumper at the Dublin Racing Festival, running on, not beaten far. You don't get easy bumpers at the DRF. The third, Runcok (Munir/Souede), was sent over hurdles two starts later, winning his maiden hurdle at Punchestown fairly comfortably under Paul Townend, front two 25L clear, beating an 80k Gordon Elliott horse sent off 7/4.

So, some decent substance there already, which excites us. Our lad has since run once more in a NHF race, on decent ground, which he may have found sharp enough, for all a third relatively quick run which may have caught up with him. However...

The Trainer -

As well as the form above, the other main 'angle' for why there should be a massive improvement, is the trainer, Paul Tobin.

My job isn't to disrespect any racing professionals, but the stats are the stats, and Paul is 0/76, 16p in his training career to date under rules, since the start of 2021. Those stats come from 18 different horses to date. It would be fair to assume there should be plenty of improvement to come from a change of yards.

By all accounts Paul is a 'hobby' trainer, who doesn't actually have any facilities of note, and certainly nothing like this lad will find at Toby's. The horses do look in fine condition of course, and well cared for, but it's a big trainer upgrade.

There's a strong chance Pounds At The Time hasn't been that fit, which marks up his Tramore run even further, and there's no doubt Toby's will be a more professional, cleaner environment, one that isn't part farm, with a few horses knocking around. Toby's approach and gallops will transform this horse even further.

I will also mention a couple of horses Paul previously trained...

Bossofthebuss, who was 0/6 for the yard including a 45l defeat on handicap debut. He left after that, had a break and two starts later won a handicap hurdle for his new yard. And...

One Big Bang - who was 0/8 for Paul, had run the odd ok race, including a close 3rd off OR99 at Limerick in a handicap hurdle, but was then PU on his final start. James Owen, based in Newmarket, then picked him up, no doubt fed him differently and got him the fittest/healthiest he'd been in his life, and has since won x3, the last of which was a Class 2 Pertemps Qualifier around Haydock, doing so comfortably off OR126. He was touched off in a Grade 3 handicap earlier this season. We'd take similar results!

Clearly it's a yard that you can massively improve horses from, and said horses can be marked up when they've already shown a bit, as was the case with Pounds At The Time in that Tramore run. He's a proper 'could be anything' type, exciting.

Breeding -

The two angles and 'ways in' above were the big positives, as was seeing that he clearly has a level of ability, does take his training well and can race. When a jumps horse has made the racecourse, shown ability, and has some solid form developing, arguably any breeding becomes less relevant.

However, his breeding is also a positive, Workforce making his way as a National Hunt Sire, a previous Derby & ARC winner, with a 35% winners/to runners ratio which is decent and should keep improving, given he's only had 69 UK/IRE jumps runners, and has been doing well abroad also, including in the Japanese jumps scene with a handful of very good horses. They're generally honest types, triers, who want it, and that certainly looks the case with our new lad.

His dam is Cloisin Hill Girl, who was a lightly raced maiden, but a half-sister to multiple winner Chicoria (hurdles/fences), both out of a half sister to Supreme Novices hurdle winner Sausalito Bay. His pedigree page here: https://secure.tattersalls.ie/cat/july/2023/140.pdf

There is loads of physical & mental development to come in time, and just the type we like - a young raw horse our trainers can mould into the finished article in time, who are open to any amount of improvement as they mature and work their way up the ranks and through the codes. He should jump a fence in time.

*

We believe we've found an exciting prospect, for what is an exceptional value price (£23k all in), a horse that will improve bundles over time for switching to Toby's, get us excited and give us all plenty to look forward to as the seasons progress.

Pounds At The Time passed his vetting with flying colours, no notes at all, clean limbed, a great mover, clean winded, tendons all scanned, etc.

The Plan -

He'll soon be on his way over, and we'll see how quickly he settles into his new life. Ideally we'd have looked to win a bumper with him, but as he's raced over hurdles already, we're unable to do that over here (different rules to Ireland) - the big positive of course is that we've seen him jump in a race.

It's likely we'll give him two quick spins in 2m maiden hurdles and look to get a workable handicap mark which gives him and us the best chance of winning as many races as possible and climbing through the ranks. If he starts showing Toby plenty in a short space of time, we can revisit that plan, but the handicapper can be so quick to punish you, it would be great to get in in from a mark where there should be plenty of improvement to come.

His bumper run and some of his breeding would suggest that he should improve for 2m4f in time, and maybe further, but he'll tell Toby and us, and he'll get a grip on him at home. He looks strong, tough, honest, hardy and should take his racing very well.

He's very much one for the 'winter' jumps season moving forward, September-end April, and his form to date may suggest he wants some dig in the ground, but you're never best putting horses into boxes at this stage, for all you'd want to avoid 'summer' Good. A wet spring would help as we could run him into May before he has a short break, and returns in time for the autumn and a full season ahead. Given his age, he should obviously keep strengthening with time, season to season. He should jump a fence at some stage and did make a nice shape in his maiden hurdle run.

He's a decent size at 16-1, without being a giant - but those 16.3/17h+ horses can need much longer between runs, not take their racing too well, and have problems galore. They also cost silly money, unless they're just very slow.

This lad should be perfect for Toby's local tracks, the Fontwells, Plumptons and Lingfields, where we'd anticipate him running plenty, but he'll run elsewhere of course, and we'll see how quickly he progresses. Sandown, Kempton and Newbury are not too far away either. With any luck at some stage he'll get us to some big days out.
