December Updates

from Dr. Biemer

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

December 23rd, 2020

Dear patients and friends,

A few updates are in order. Here in the office, we continue to be open for the most part, though we are doing most visits VIRTUALLY when possible. Call and discuss with one of the office staff if you feel you need to be seen in the office - Dr. Biemer or Julia Jones, CNP will review. If you do come into the office we request that you bring a maximum of one additional adult when necessary, or come alone if possible. This will be our policy through at least February and likely through the Spring of 2021. We hope you understand we are trying to protect our patients as well as staff. We've had a few "close calls" with patients in our office and exposing staff to Covid, though thus far none of our office staff have been sick with the virus.

If you follow the Oregon Health Authority online you know the virus is very prevalent in our communities, and avoiding infection still will require vigilance, likely until at least summer of 2021.

There is obviously a lot of information coming out about vaccines. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines appear to have fairly equivalent activity in preventing infection, and likely similar safety profiles. I (Dr. Biemer) am considered "medium risk," and will certainly take the vaccine when it is offered. Read on below for more information. I expect now to be sending you fairly regular updates regarding vaccine programs and availability- PLEASE try to be patient!

We have high hopes for successful vaccination and return to some semblance of normal by mid 2021. With that in mind, we wish you a wonderful and healthy holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Dr. Biemer, Julia Jones and the whole office crew

Distribution

The vaccine is to be distributed initially to the following groups...

1A. Health care workers with direct exposure to COVID-19 in their work as well as long term care facility employees and residents*

1B. Essential workers as defined by OHA and CDC*

1C. People with underlying health conditions and those over 65 years of age*

*These are groups as outlined by the OHA. Additional discussion of how these decisions have been reached and the ethical principals involved are available through the CDC.

Timeline

The vaccine is currently being administered to group 1A. The OHA expects that groups B and C will be vaccinated by Spring, subject to vaccine availability.

Our Practice

It is not obvious yet when or if the vaccine will be available to our clinic for distribution. In addition to careful state level oversight of distribution, there are currently storage specifications that would prove challenging to small clinics (the Pfizer vaccine, for example, is stored at -70 degrees Celsius). For the time being, vaccinations will be distributed through hospitals and local public health agencies. We will let you know as soon as we know more about this.

Holiday hours

Open December 24th, Christmas Eve until noon, closed on Christmas day

Open December 31st, New Year's Eve until noon, closed on New Year's day

A few recommendations...

  • DO consider scheduling regular follow ups and annual exams virtually. Preventive care goes a long way toward keeping you healthy and we will do our best to make the virtual experience smooth and comfortable.

  • DO carry on following precautions, wearing a face mask, hand washing, and maintaining physical distance. These are proven methods of reducing risk to you and your loved ones.

  • DO NOT assume that negative covid testing is a replacement for safe habits during the holidays. There are still some false negatives, and covid has a long incubation period during which an infected person might test negative.

Here is a list of Covid testing sites compiled by Washington County. Although the list was compiled in Washington county, many of the listed resources are available to the greater Portland area. Here is the Oregon Health Authority Testing Map.
