Update on Ideal Protein Diet

For the past 4 months, our office has been working with the Quebec-based company Ideal Protein to help our patients get back to and maintain appropriate body weight. Metabolic syndrome (high triglycerides, elevated blood pressure, pre-diabetes in the setting of abdominal obesity), diabetes, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, and major joint and back problems are a very small selection of the medical issues that can be significantly improved or outright cured with weight loss and proper diet.

Our IP program is a medically-supervised low calorie, low carbohydrate diet with protein supplements to spare your muscle while you burn fat. Men typically lose 4-5 lbs. per week and women average about 3 lbs per week during "Phase 1" of the diet. There is a gradual transition back to a balanced diet as well as an excellent support/educational program to help you maintain your appropriate weight.

If you feel you eat good/healthy food, get plenty of physical activity and despite this cannot lose weight, you're not alone. We've come to understand that the body has a number of mechanisms in place to fight against abrupt changes in weight, even if it's good for you. To get the weight off and reach a new and comfortable plateau, it is helpful to throw the body "out of balance" for a period of time (there is NO evidence that this is an unhealthy way to lose). Afterwards, you can return to a balanced diet that includes reasonable portions of carbohydrates, fresh fruit, and alcohol; though you will learn about and likely change many of the factors that led to the original weight gain.

All patients are asked if they are interested to attend to a 90 minute workshop describing the program and its physiologic explanations before starting. We're currently signing up interested patients for the September 8th 5:30pm workshop, as well as the October 6th 5:00pm workshop. There are a limited number of spaces available at these evening seminars so please contact Kazumi, our medical assistant and coach (kazumi.schoen@providence.org), if you are interested in participating. In the mean time please visit the Ideal Protein Home Page to learn more, or read the summary below Dr. Biemer's message.

Stay well,
