August 2014 Newsletter
Summer's predictable slowdown is a great time to catch up on unfinished projects, and thus, this long overdue newsletter. I like being able to reach out in this way for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, it's the fastest way to reach you when there is an urgent medical concern - an outbreak of infectious disease in the community or perhaps a recall of a commonly used medication. Or less urgently, breaking news that could affect the way we treat common illnesses like hypertension (some relaxing of goals in the past year for the over-60 crowd) or news about exercise (even 5 minutes per day of vigorous exercise can potentially add years to your life). As it's been a year since I last sent a letter, I wanted this brief note to be a test to see if all systems are go. I hope you'll take a moment to read our brief notes, but of course if you don't want to be on this list then let us know. Enjoy the beautiful Oregon summer!

Peak Performance

Currently a work in progress, this program is designed to accurately measure (beyond the usual physical exam) your current fitness and cardiac risk factors, and to assist you in moving these parameters - developing a healthier diet, better exercise program, reducing sources of inflammation in the body and in doing so hopefully reduce risk of cardiac and other vascular events.

I am currently investigating outside labs that can do a reasonably priced extensive lab panel that may include indicators of inflammation, advanced lipid analysis with sub-particle analysis, and hormone levels. I would love to be able to measure aerobic capacity and VO2 max in the office, as a benchmark for improvement year by year. In addition, I continue to add partners in the community that are interested in the same areas, including traditional medical specialties such as cardiology as well as "alternative providers" such as naturopaths, chiropractors and acupuncture providers.

If you have contributions (such as great community providers, websites, gadgets, etc.) or ideas about what you'd like to see in the Peak Performance program, please contact me by email or call the office at any time.
