It’s less than 5 months until you’ll be moving into ISSofBC Welcome Centre, and it’s time to get to know your new building and neighbourhood.

T
his enews includes info on what the centre looks like on the inside and what the surrounding area is like. If there is something you’d like to know about ISSofBC Welcome Centre and the surroundings, please send an email to welcomecentre@issbc.org
Neighbourhood Perspective

To help you get to know the neighbourhood, each enews includes an interview with an ISSofBC staff member who lives in the neighbourhood. This enews went to Chris Stephenson, ISSofBC Communications Coordinator, who has called the Trout Lake area home for 3 years now.

What do you like about the area? I love Trout Lake as a peaceful place to walk, have a BBQ or hang out on the beach. I sometimes even swim in the summer months when the water is clean enough! I also love being close to Commercial Drive with all the coffee shops, diverse restaurants and organic grocery stores.

Why is the area a good one for our clients?
The Commercial Drive area is a perfect place for newcomers because the community demographics truly represent Canada. People of many different cultural backgrounds and lifestyles live and work together in this neighbourhood which sets a great example for immigrants and refugees. Also the Welcome Centre is close to many amenities, community centre, parks and the major transit routes which is helpful for anyone new to the city.

What are some of your favourite neighbourhood haunts?
Bandidas Taqueria for amazing vegetarian tacos, JJ Bean coffee shop for any hot beverage on a rainy day, Donald's grocery store for reasonably-priced organic produce and Falconetti’s East Side Grill for drinks on the roof top patio.

Anything else you’d like to add?
I’m looking forward to seeing all my coworkers and clients in the neighbourhood!

Where is ISSofBC Welcome Centre?

ISSofBC Welcome Centre’s main entrance is at Victoria Drive and East 10th Avenue. ISSofBC’s Welcome Centre is one block south of Broadway and one block east of Commercial Drive. The centre is one block from the 10th Avenue Exit of the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain Station.

The Centre is on the northern edge of the Kensington-Cedar Cottage neighbourhood, and right next door to the Grandview-Woodlands neighbourhood. So ISSofBC Welcome Centre has the unique opportunity to connect with two neighbourhoods and one major commercial and service street: Commercial Drive.

The mailing address is 2610 Victoria Drive, Vancouver BC, V5N 4L2. Click on the address to view the location on google maps.
What stage is construction?

The crane has been taken down and the building is starting to look like the drawings we’ve all seen over the last couple of years.

Over 70 construction workers representing every trade are working six days a week as we turn to the targeted spring completion date.

For regular updates on the construction including photos stories and statistics, check out the ISSofBC Welcome Centre Blog.
Veronica’s Corner

As we all get ready for the big move, each enews includes some important information from ISSofBC Move Coordinator, Veronica Lee:
  • ISSofBC has contracted Redpath Relocations to handle the move;
  • Moving dates have been established: Terminal May 4th & 5th; Drake May 11th;
  • ISSofBC Relocation Team (Chris S, George, Tessie, Donna, Eric, Paul, Ivo, Karen, Den & Veronica) has been meeting regularly for the last year working out all of the details for the move;
  • Floor plans & furniture inventories have now been finalized – you’ve probably started to see stickers on your desks or chairs.
And finally what we can all do to make the move go smoothly is to purge! Purge!! PURGE!!!
