A-TEAM APPS TIPS

May 30, 2022
RC Glossary, Torque
1. With regards to a motor or engine, the amount of force applied to twist the shaft. This is distinct from the speed of the shaft (RPM).

Example: If you spin a wooden toy top, it would have very little torque - you could stop it with your thumb and forefinger. However, put your fingers in the path of a real car’s running fan and you could lose a few digits! The torque of the car's fan is more powerful.

In general, because of the rougher terrain, off road vehicles prefer motors (and engines) with more torque while RPM-tuned motors favor on-road vehicles.

Racers have asked us which motor has the most torque and RPM. There is always a trade-off. If you want more RPM, you’ll have to sacrifice some torque, and vice-versa.

Racers attain more torque in a variety of ways. For a motor, they change the timing or use stiffer springs. For nitro, torque-tuned pipes may be used.

2. Steering servo power is measured in torque. Off-road vehicles require more torque (oz./in.) than on-road cars.
