ROE ENDS: LET LOVE BEGIN

This week we're talking about this most consequential moment in human rights' history: Overturning of 
Roe v. Wade (1973), the infamous act of raw judicial power creating a right to kill unborn children based upon shadows ("penumbra"), from conception through all nine months and beyond. For any reason.

The toll on unborn children has been well over 60 million. Add the same number of mothers and fathers. And all the rest of us.

Last Friday, June 24, 2022 in Dobbs v. Jackson the Supreme Court rightly determined that abortion is not a guaranteed right:

“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely — the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. That provision has been held to guarantee some rights that are not mentioned in the Constitution, but any such right must be ‘deeply rooted in this Nation’s history and tradition’ and ‘implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.’”

From a faith perspective, it's notable this took place on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A day otherwise reserved for the Feast of St. John the Baptist. Commemorating the profound communication between two, unborn persons who changed the course of human history. Who could have predicted the first reading proclaimed in Catholic churches throughout the world would include these words from the the prophet Ezekial, addressing a people exiled and suffering due to their idolatry and failure of their leaders (who were both political and ecclesial): 

"I myself will pasture my sheep;
I myself will give them rest, says the Lord GOD.
The lost I will seek out,
the strayed I will bring back,
the injured I will bind up,
the sick I will heal,
but the sleek and the strong I will destroy,
shepherding them rightly." 
     EZEKIAL 34:11-16

The fault line in our humanity is all the more open.

In our radio program airing tonight, but accessible via our podcast (GO) right now Stephanie and I address this monumental moment. What does it mean? How should we respond? 

The battle for the hearts, minds, and lives of mothers and children, and all committed to truly caring for them, doesn't end. It shifts all the more from impersonal systems to engagement of individual souls; it's not ultimately about laws but the hearts of individual people. With a powerful, poignant cameo from Greg's mother, Judy Schlueter -- foundress of Bethesda, a post-abortion healing ministry.

At the very heart it turns to us. Marriage and family are the very core of civilization. God's image to the world. (Gen. 1:27) The foundation is our personal relationship with God in Jesus Christ. As for us, Stephanie and I pledge all within our means to help any woman and child in crisis, before, during and after birth. We're not out to win any popularity contests. We're deeply moved by God's desire for every person to know and live for Him. God has put air in our lungs and the capacity to live, proclaim and support others. We offer these "Ten Measures of a Healthy American Soul" (full article):

(1) If truth is whatever anyone wants it to mean, it means everything. Which is to say, nothing. Anything goes. All morals are absurd. Notions of "female," "male," "marriage," and "human life" are meaningless.
(2) It's impossible not to judge. To disagree is to prove my point.
(3) If you tolerate falsehood and the bad, you are intolerant of truth and the good. You can't have it both ways.
(4) Respect for another's conscience does not mean to abandon your own.
(5) We cannot break the moral law; we can only break ourselves against it. (Cecil B DeMille)
(6) Babble, Lot, Sodom and Gomorrah was not just a historical account. (Gen. 19)
(7) Not to speak is to speak. Not to act as to act. God will hold us accountable. (Dietrich Bonhoeffer)
(8) We can't create truth. Truth created us.
(9) The only orientation that matters is the one we all share: from sin to salvation in Jesus Christ.
