"FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION"
Apollo 13 and Our Christian Mission

In the annals of space exploration, few missions have captured the world's attention like Apollo 13. Launched on April 11, 1970, with the goal of landing two astronauts on the moon, the mission took a harrowing turn when an oxygen tank exploded. Suddenly, the astronauts—Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise—found themselves in a fight for their lives, stranded in space with dwindling resources and uncertain odds of survival.

Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, it was Gene Kranz, the legendary flight director of NASA's Mission Control, who uttered the now-iconic words: "Failure is not an option." These words were not just a rallying cry; they were a lifeline, a beacon of hope in the face of overwhelming adversity. They encapsulated the spirit of determination and resilience that defined the entire Apollo 13 mission.

As the world held its breath, millions watched anxiously as NASA engineers and astronauts worked tirelessly to bring the crippled spacecraft and its crew safely back to Earth. It was a Herculean effort that required ingenuity, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to a singular goal: the safe return of the astronauts.

Gene Kranz's statement galvanized not only the NASA team but also people around the world who followed the mission's progress with bated breath. It became a symbol of human perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, inspiring countless individuals to rally around the shared purpose of saving the lives of three brave astronauts.

The sacrifices made during the Apollo 13 mission were profound. From the sleepless nights of the NASA engineers to the brave endurance of the astronauts in the cold depths of space, every action was fueled by the collective belief that failure was not an option. It was a testament to the power of unity and purpose, showing what humanity can achieve when we come together in pursuit of a common goal.

All that to understand our ultimate mission.
This week in the Gospel, Jesus' ultimate mission plays out in the Temple (John 2:13-25). He is mission control. He is the mission. He is our only hope for salvation from our current predicament. He alone knows what it takes. Just as the astronauts of Apollo 13 faced life-threatening challenges in space, so too do believers confront spiritual battles on earth. The stakes are infinitely higher, for we are engaged in an epic struggle between good and evil, light and darkness.

In this realm, failure is not just a setback; it is a matter of eternal consequence. The eternal souls of humanity hang in the balance; the choices we make have far-reaching implications for both this life and the hereafter. Just as Gene Kranz's statement inspired unity and sacrifice among the NASA team, so too should the urgency of our mission compel us to action, to stand firm in the face of adversity and proclaim with unwavering conviction that failure is not an option.

As Christians, we are called to be ambassadors of light in a world shrouded in darkness, to bear the message of hope and redemption to all who will hear. Our mission is clear, our purpose undeniable: to live lives of faith, love, and righteousness, and to lead others into the glorious light of God's Kingdom.

In the end, the parallels between the Apollo 13 mission and our spiritual journey serve as a poignant reminder of the power of determination, unity, and unwavering faith. Just as the astronauts returned safely to Earth against all odds, so too can we overcome every obstacle and triumph in our ultimate mission, knowing that with God, failure is never an option.

It's Lent. It's about holiness. Let's go after it. Together.
